My Issue with Mantras

Sunday, July 29, 2018

A lot of people take inspiration from mantras. It helps them to achieve their goals, etc. Yet for me whenever I look at mantras they feel like judgments, like criticism. Rather than being inspired I become weighed down with the failure of not achieving what that mantra is saying. Basically mantras have the exact opposite effect on me and my psyche. I become crushed by them and the failure of not already doing them. This ties in also with positive thinking. For me, positive thinking is fake, trite, and doesn't encompass the complexity of life. If anyone has any tips, I'd appreciate it. Everyone I know personally says they can't help me.

hmmmm. I never thought about mantras the way you do. Always good to see another's point of view.

I know you're going through a tough time but is there an activity you enjoy, a favorite place to visit? Would it help to use that as a mantra, just a word or two. Just trying to put myself in your place and try to figure out what might be a little easier.

Try to keep in mind that those mantras don't mean you have to live up to them, they aren't going to change the world. Just try to think of them as a just-in-the-moment thing. One of the yoga videos I do, she says on an inhale, say to yourself, "I choose" and on the exhale "to let go". I remember the first time i did it, instead of thinking about the mantra, I thought "be serious,I can'tI let go of ...." I always came up with the four or five things that were making my stomach churn at the time.

I decided to try to just say it without expectations, without actually believing I could do that, just take it for that moment. It took some time but I'm getting better at it.

Sorry if this all sounds hokey. I truly wish I had the magic words for you. I'm glad you are blogging though, getting these thoughts and feelings out there.

    I'm thinking about you.

I have a mantra for my anxiety. It's a bible verse...no judgement...no criticism. "He gathers the lambs in His arms and holds them close to His heart."

If mantras don't work for you, find something else. I never gave them a thought personally. 🦋
