Keto, I did it.

Tuesday, June 12, 2018

On 5/29/18 I decided to go Keto. I had several reasons besides the obvious hope of losing weight doing it; the major one was pain relief. I'd done some research and learned that keto has some anti-inflammatory benefits. Quite honestly, my RA and OA made me feel like I wanted to die some days.

Going keto is no joke. I knew I was a pretty hard core sugar junkie. The thought of giving up carbs was pretty terrifying to me. But I knew that I wasn't getting anywhere. All it would take was one chip, one M&M, one cookie and my food zombie would take over and I couldn't stop. I'd just keep eating. My joints were throbbing, I'm taking some scary meds with some really scary potential side effects. And my weight was ticking up... and up. I checked first with my doctor and was given the okay to give it a try. I wondered if I could do it for a month and saw what happened.

One of my coworkers is doing keto. I talked to her and talked to her some more. I gathered as much info as I could. I printed recipes and lists of foods I could and could not eat, and then I went shopping.

And on May 29th I went full out keto. I didn't ease into it - like I probably should have - I went cold turkey and cut our all bread, grains, potatoes, sugar, the works! OMG, within 24 hours I thought I was going to die. It was like my body was going through drug withdrawal! It was a pretty brutal 5 days, but I stuck it out.

And something amazing happened... I felt WONDERFUL. My mood went from depressed to cheerful. I found energy again and some of my joints actually stopped hurting! Not all of them, mind you - osteoarthritis is no joke, but hey, it's a start.

The weirdest thing is, I'm really not craving bread or chocolate or sweets. I did have a massive pizza craving the other day but I was able to find some pizza I was able to eat. The crust was made out of chicken breast! And it wasn't terrible! I made cauliflower taco rice last night and it was absolutely amazing!

I go back to see my doctor in two weeks. I'm holding off on weighing myself until then. We'll see how it goes, but my clothes feel definitely don't feel as tight so I'm hopeful!

I think I'm going to stay on this keto journey for a while... emoticon

Great blog! Yes carbohydrates, and the blood sugar connection are a very real addiction. People don't want to think of it that way, because if they sell it in grocery stores, and children can eat it, then it must be OK.

    NOT SO!

Break on through to the other side! I too almost passed out just going for a walk in the first 3 or 4 days.

    Great going too!

Hi Linda, I can tell you that after 2 weeks of no cheating, I can actually say that I really do feel a bit better, especially my hands and feet. My knee may be a lost cause though. LOL
