I start by wiggling my toes....

I'm not a big fan of structured exercise. In a perfect world I would live in the south of France and walk down to the open air market each day carrying my basket and walk back up the hill to my apartment and then walk down again in the afternoon for for yoga class. Once or twice a week I went for a day long hike in the mountains with a group of women. I did that for six years and it was lovely. And exercise was just life happening. Then I moved back to the states with streets not made for walking and having to get in the car to go everywhere and exercise just became another thing to DO. I took up ballroom dancing and loved that..but circumstances caused that to end. As I have aged I find myself less and less interested in formal exercise, classes bore me before they are done and stiff and sore muscles seem too high a price to pay.
I also have a difficult time getting out of bed in the morning. I have been retired for quite some time, live alone and I love the luxurious feeling of not having to get up. I do walk my dog twice a day for a total of about an hour and I was feeling pretty good about that. Then along came Chris Sparky Guy Downy. I started reading his motivational material and how just 10 minutes of fitness can change your life. I had the idea that maybe I could do some yoga stretches in bed before I get up. When my alarm goes off (birdsong) I thank God for giving me another day and then I set my timer for 10 minutes. I know enough yoga moves to do a variety of things. Most days I just start by wiggling my toes, rotating my feet, and then different gentle movements all while laying in bed. By the time 10 minutes is up, I am fully awake and ready to face the day.
The other major change I have made lately is getting washed and dressed as soon as I get up and putting on my lace up shoes. Then making my bed. Then I am really ready for the day. If you want to know more about why lace up shoes, google FlyLady. My other support system. Its been probably about a month I have been doing my yoga stretches first thing and I have noticed a HUGE difference in my flexibility and a lot less muscle soreness after gardening or other strenuous activity. I'm also feeling more energy and able to accomplish more of my daily goals.
