Retiring as a TEAM

Wednesday, January 31, 2018

Many of you remember my trip to Palm Springs in October of 2010 for training to get my first ever guide dog. Her name is Leone. We were a good team. I'm Legally blind and totally deaf with the assistance of a Cochlear implant for my right ear. (The left never worked) Leone has had a few Traumatic experiences in her time with me We don't have a yard so we had to walk in parks or around here. She has witnessed us getting chased down and attacked by aggressive dogs and She recently was attacked and her neck and ear torn in late December. She refused to wwork for me. And she doesn't lunge or bark at other dogs now. She is mellow and submissive. I am always looking for a place with a yard to move to but it's impossible in my situation. She did help me with exercise. I will keep her as a pet and hopefully in the futer get another one. I'm sharing this with you all. Happy New Year!

I am so sorry to hear about your dogs being attacked on their walks with you. It seems like you live in a tough area. The dogs around here aren't really like that. Guide dogs shouldn't have to be ready to attack every other dog they meet like that. That doesn't sound right. Maybe even if you can't find a yard, if you were to move to another area, it might really help you. That is such a bad area for your dogs!

Oh, I am so sorry your dear Leone has been traumatized (and Robert, too?) and is no longer able to do her job as your guide. I remember when she came into your life...you were so happy!

I guess I sometimes forget that not all dogs are cared for and trained like yours and mine. Yes, for that reason we need to carry something just in case. We do not have actual dog parks here, just regular parks, but I now look at the dogs from afar and see how they are acting. We do not always get that chance though.
You still have a beautiful and smart, loving dog as a "furbaby" Nothing can change that. She is still your girl!
Thanks for sharing that with us.

I have a personal alert i carry on my fanny bag. My hand is always on it. I got this after the attack on robert by the Mastiff. I'm going to be sending you a video that caused Leone to really change in her behavior. Through your email.

FYI: When you state yesterday that you had posted on your blog, I went there immediately and the July 8 was the last post. I would have responded if it was there at that time. I am so sorry that Leone had to go through all of that. SO sorry that she had to retire so soon. I hop you do carry mace or bleach or something with you.
