A New Year and Hopefully a New Me

Monday, January 01, 2018

Six years ago I joined Spark in efforts to become healthier and mostly to find a way to lose weight. Starting at a weight of 260 pounds, I hit the ground running and after two years I hit 205 pounds. Unfortunately, I have too many triggers for bad habits than I care to try to count. I have bounced between 215 to 260 pounds the entire time I have been on Sparks.

I have gone months with great diet and exercise logged only to go months sabotaging all of my efforts. Most recently I have found myself on a downward slope. My with is pregnant with our first child and I have found myself eating for two as well and not always healthy calories. With holiday get together and daily stresses, I have failed to stay on point.

I stopped to think about how bad my eating and exercise has been lately this morning. I once again have vowed to change my habits for good. I started out my renewed journey with a run this morning. It has been a few months since I have run due to knee pain. It felt great to get back outside and let my mind roam during the run. Not even zero degree temperatures could dampened my spirits. As I delved deeper into thoughts, I started to worry that this new start to the year will end in haphazard choices when it comes to my health; the same as the past six years.

In efforts to prevent my past mistakes, am starting this new year off with two major goals in mind.

The first is to tackle my stress, which is a major cause of overeating for me. I plan to start by trying to find ways to unplug after work before tackling things at home. I am hoping that unwinding from work stresses before doing chores at home will keep me from overloading and stress eating.

The second is to find ways to enjoy holidays and celebrations with my family and friends and still keep a healthy lifestyle. I love time with my family and get togethers with co-workers and friends, but it always seems to come along with blowing off exercise and eating poorly. I have tried to resist the temptations, but the end of the year always seems to bring a 2 month binge of party foods and drinks. There are sugary snacks around all day at work, then family time brings fatty meals made by my dad or the in-laws. I have tried cooking the meals for my family, but everyone wants to do the family traditions of bacon and egg breakfasts, cookies, chocolates, cheese and crackers, huge dinners, and copious amounts of adult beverages. I have yet to devise a plan to combat this assault to my stomach. I am hoping to find some answers before the next holiday comes along.

Here is to a Happy New Year and with luck permanent lifestyle changes for me.

You can do this! Start simple. Dont try to eliminate all the bad things at once. Pick one or two things at a time with laser focus for at least two weeks and then add on another thing to eliminate and repeat the 2 week process. Rock it!

Good luck in 2018. Not a big Red Wing fan.
