5 important Things #3 Attitude

I've heard it said that attitude is everything. I can tell you from almost 40 years of experience as a Speech Language Pathologist, that it is almost everything in my field! I have worked in nearly every possible environment: schools, long term care, acute hospital, home health, rehab, VA and private practice. I have been a manager in some of those environments and a supervisor in others. Without a doubt, attitude makes a difference.

I have worked with some therapists who know the books and what is to be done with whatever the client's or patient's need is, but their attitude can turn off the individual they are trying to help and truly block any possible success. I have watched therapists make themselves a problem for others on their team so no one wants to work with them. You can have the smartest of the smart and if they don't have the interpersonal skills and the openness to learn, cooperate and be a team member, they won't succeed in the position.

But attitude can be tricky. For example, it is a good idea to be positive, even with myself, but if I become arrogant or overconfident, I can easily lose all I have gained. I try to begin every morning with an attitude go gratefulness. Perhaps you have a "Higher power." I talk to God. I send time remembering that all that I have and all that I am along first to Him. I read my Bible to learn what I can about how Jesus lived on this earth, so I can try to be like Him as much as possible while I am here.

Then, I know if I am eating healthy foods and staying physically fit, I will feel better about myself, and that helps my mental attitude as well. My state of mind has a direct correlation on how I sit, stand and express myself. Humor is also a critical part of having a great attitude. I so enjoy blogs that provide insights and those that are just fun! I so appreciate everyone who blogs! I'm not so great at it and so don't write very often unless there is a particular topic I can address, but very much appreciate and look forward to the wonderful words of wisdom that lift my attitude every day! So thank you!!

    I too find gratefulness very mindful.
    During walking, it is my habit to list the things I'm grateful for,
    starting with my body that is healthy, uninjured, strong,
    then my home, food, clear water and air...
