Dangers of a Sendentary Lifestyle OR . . .

Wednesday, November 15, 2017

When I found out what this week’s blog challenge was, I took to the “Google Machine” and looked up “sendentary lifestyle” and these are just some of the articles that came up:

1. “7 Negative Effects of a Sedentary Lifestyle”

2. “Sedentary Lifestyle (Sitting Disease): How to Get Active”

3. “Sedentary Lifestyle is Dangerous to Your Health”

4. “The Growing Costs of a Sedentary Lifestyle”

5. “Sitting Disease: How a Sedentary Lifestyle Affects Heart Health”

6. “Physical inactivity a leading cause of disease and disability, warns WHO”

7. “Sedentary Lifestyle Can Kill”

8. “Sedentary Lifestyle Speeds Up Biological Aging”

9. “Sedentary Lifestyle Linked to Diabetes”

10. “Sedentary Lifestyle Linked to Depression”

11. “Is Sedentary Lifestyle as Dangerous to Seniors as Smoking?”

12. “Your Sedentary Lifestyle is Turning You Into a Nervous Wreck”

13. “Sedentary Lifestyle as a Risk for Low Back Pain: a Systematic Review”

14. “The Sedentary Lifestyle and Muscle Loss”

15. “Study: Obesity Surge Fueled by Sedentary Lifestyle”.

Just reading the titles alone was enough to scare me right out of my chair and into a session of “Olympic House Walking” (you know, where you do laps through the living room, dining room, kitchen, etc. to make sure your get in all your steps for the day). My family thinks I’m crazy, but I have actually been known to do that. Come on, admit it. Some of you have, too. But I digress.

I picked one of those “Google” titles at random and started reading an article about the side effects of sitting too much. They included things like emotional/mood instability, being at in increased risk for cancer, forgetfulness, and spiking blood sugar. Embedded in the article was a Ted Ed video called “Why Sitting is Bad for You”. It’s about 5 minutes long and explains that your body was meant to move, what happens when it doesn’t, and how that causes some of the negative outcomes described in all those articles the “Google Machine” spit out at me. Here’s a link to the video, just in case you need some motivation to get up out of your chair:

Now, as James Brown said, “Get Up Offa That Thing” and DANCE!
