Starting over

Hello fellow Sparklers! I'm starting, yet again, to get healthy! I've joined a gym (Lifetime Fitness) and enrolled in a Team Burn class 3 days a week! I gotta tell you, trying to keep up in such a hard class at 53 isn't easy! My first 2 weeks I felt like quitting. I joined in July and received 2 free weeks of this class before I decided if it was for me. After 2 weeks I was thinking, nah, this class is definitely not for me! My feet were killing me, I had just enough energy to walk to my car, the soreness was atrocious BUT after talking to a very friendly and informative trainer he advised me that IT WILL GET BETTER, JUST DON'T QUIT! He was absolutely right! It's my 3rd week and there's no soreness, my feet don't hurt as much and I have more energy.

I also found out that I was depriving my body of calories screwing my metabolism up. I had to increase my calories by 250 per day and increase my water intake by 48 ounces. Turns out the 8 cups of water a day (64 oz) that we've all heard all of our lives isn't quite right. Turns out that you need half of your body weight in ounces so if you weigh 200 pounds you need 100 ounces. That's over 6 bottles of water! I thought I was doing so well with my water intake but turns out I need to drink 3 more bottles per day! Also, I never eat salt but my body needs salt! My trainer suggested putting a pinch of sea salt in my water with lemon. I haven't tried it yet but plan on doing it tomorrow.

Also, I haven't lost any weight, which was a huge reason why I wanted to give up. My trainer again told me that I really wouldn't see a difference in my body fat percentage for about 3 months! Because my metabolism is so out of wack and I haven't exercised in some time it's going to take a little longer for my results but to be patient. I actually have lost 3 pounds, but I know I shouldn't be looking at the scale right now. What I need to do is take my measurements for encouragement. I do see a little change already in my clothes not being as tight! Last night I tried on a blouse I haven't worn in a while and it actually looks pretty good. Still a little tight but it won't be long now!

I know I have to change my eating habits because I eat way too many carbs (love pasta and potatoes too much) but baby steps. I don't want to completely try and overhaul my life at one time because I'll definitely get burned out and quit.

This is just a little reminder to those starting out on a new exercise regime to NOT GIVE UP! I know it's hard and you feel like quitting but things will get better. Just give it a chance! I definitely need support from my fellow Sparklers so here's to not giving up and getting fit!
