Fast Food Memory Lane

Today I am traveling two roads together; fitness and pavement. I am driving home from a 35-mile airport run and memories abound. Many customers that I serviced up to 2 years ago before I retired are along this Silicon Valley highway: Yahoo, Intel, Lockheed, Stanford University. I am passing the places where I ate and drank many lunches and I am remembering as I pass their off ramps.
MM-mm. Krispy Kreme donuts, hot, dripping with sugar and grease. Or filled with custard. Not today, maybe not ever.
Inn-n-Out Burger. Great cheeseburgers! My favorite: a single cheeseburger, fries and a chocolate shake. But, that is 1800 calories! Close to my whole days’ worth! Not today, not in 2017.
Ah, there is MacDonald’s. (I pass several) The only thing there for me is their salads. Sorry Ronald.
Subway. I can get a modest sandwich there and a juice. That works on occasion.
Oh there! My favorite Jack in the Box location by my old office. Master of curly fries and big chocolate shakes. Pass on by.
Starbucks. Oh I can stop there, cup of coffee and a decent restroom, my adult refresh spot. (I did stop at one on my route this day.) That display case is holding one of my favorite treats, Frosted Lemon Pound Cake. I’ve eaten quite a few of these, takes about 3-4 minutes and its gone. Mouth happy for 5 minutes. Cost? 480 calories, or about 5500 steps on my Fitbit. Not today, not in 2017.
And so it goes. Memory lane is filled with calorie-laden thoughts. I get off the freeway, head towards my home and there it is, a little store front on my left with a neon “Open” sign glaring in the window under a big one-word marquee, “DONUTS.” Best donuts in town. I used to stop there on my way to work and get 2 and coffee. Usually had one down before I was on the freeway (3 blocks). As much as I love this little shop, there is nothing in there for me in 2017, not even coffee. Far too tempting and why stop for just coffee?
On my Spark and life adventure, my goal to get to my 185 lb. marriage weight. My old places are mostly off limits. Not always, but I am calorie smart on the exceptions and I know and count the cost. Killer-calorie laden stuff is just out, as are empty calories. “Comes with 20 oz. drink.” I pay for the drink and pour a big cup of icy water.
That’s my new journey. I will have slow times and plateaus. I’ve read many Sparker stories, they know, me too. My resolve is that I stay true to my goal and away from the wrong places and not hurt myself with self-inflicted calorie “wounds.” My vision and my bursting desire, I can see it!...is that my fitness road will see the new me celebrating as I drive into 2018.
