Back to the Beginning

Saturday, September 17, 2016

In the last year my mother now 90 1/2 broke her only good leg as her other was amputated in 2004. My husband who was in a major bicycle wreck in 2010 resulting in brain injury and broken bones, was in another simple bike wreck and tore all the ligaments etc away from his knee requiring surgery and donor tissue .

My mom no longer walks but among the three of us (my sister, husband and self) we can lift her into wheel chair, into her chair and into bed. We bought a ramp van in 2015 to facilitate getting them both around. My husband has recovered fully, but no longer rides with the bike team as his reaction time is not that good after the closed brain injury in 2010.

This spring we also almost completely gutted our old house out here because it was sinking and needed to be leveled. And the beams, plywood sub-floors, floors were replaced from the bottom up. We also gutted the kitchen and replaced the roof.

-Just listing my excuses for not taking care of me. I was to the point of going to a pain management doctor for injections (which were ineffective) when a still small voice came to me and said just get on your recumbent and ride.

And I did.

Today is a good day "to rejoice and be glad in it."

You have had a tough go with all the health issues. You now can take care of you! I know where you are coming from as I spent 18 months caring for my mom from hospital to short term rehab, to long term rehab and then in our home for 5 months. It takes a toll on you so take care. We are all pulling for you!
