Slow and steady wins the race...I have been working at getting healthier for a number of years. I am now back to my college weight! I had to find the formula that worked for me, and I had to repeat these same activities over and over again:

Water aerobics for 120 minutes three times a week.
Walk 20 to 30 minutes most nights after dinner.
Oatmeal and berries and skim milk for breakfast
Salad greens topped with lean protein for lunch
Reasonable dinner of lean meat and zero calorie veggies
Lots of fresh fruit rather than processed snacks
Yogurt daily
Occasional treats to keep me from feeling deprived
Water bottle with me always

There is a formula that will work for everyone...it is worth it to find what works.
