Portion Control

Monday, May 30, 2016

Yesterday was our 6th wedding anniversary! I am also starting my 6th year with SP! I have learned a lot and as I look back I can see all the changes I have made towards a healthier lifestyle.
On Saturday, my DH and I enjoyed going out for breakfast with my mom, step-dad, and grandma. To control portions I ordered off the ala-crate menu. I ordered an egg and dry toast and a fresh fruit. When our orders came, I took a small part of my DH's hash browns. My grandmother worried that it was not enough to get me through until we eat lunch. I said no but I had my portioned planned snacks in my purse. At the casino I ordered a salad with dressing on the side. The chef salad is huge there so I gave part of it to my DH. I drank water all day. We were home for supper so we grilled chicken breast, with a strawberry spinach salad and shared a cupcake for dessert. Since my only fitness that day was my morning PT stretches I really paid attention to calorie intake.
Yesterday was our anniversary, so my DH wanted to take me out for dinner. We went to a steakhouse. When our "side salads" were delivered, I said this was a whole meal for me. The salad had dark greens, hard boiled eggs, tomatoes, cucumbers, and cheese. Since I don't eat dressing due to food allergies, I asked for a small box and put half the salad in the box. Hot dinner rolls were served so I ate half of one. They were the size of my fist! Then came the main meal. I cut my baked potato in half and pushed it aside. I also only cut half of my 10 oz steak. I entered my calories and did go over just at supper, but I still stayed in my calorie range for the day!
Six years ago, I would have ordered a 3 egg omelet for breakfast, fried foods for lunch at the casino and then would have wanted to eat fast food instead of coming home to cook on Saturday. At supper last night I would have skipped the salad at supper and ordered fries and baked potato to go with my steak and not brought any home!
Yes my lifestyle changes have been slow; only making one change at a time every 2-4 months. Yes my weight has fluctuated the last 6 years, but I am also now building muscle which weights more than fat! 15 years ago I weight 450 pounds today I tip the scale at 225. Since I'm a math teacher I will do the math...that is 225 lbs lost! I keep reminding myself that the weight did not appear overnight and will not disappear overnight either. Thanks SP for the support!!!
