Assisted Living?

Tuesday, May 17, 2016

Mum and I looked at a nice place ten minutes from our home but golly, $4000/month? How are people affording this? My niece flew out from California yesterday. After 12 years of beloved and I carrying the load my sister and b-i-l sent my 30 y/o neice to help me for a week until beloved gets back. Last night I had Mum is double diapers plus a towel. This morning she needed to pee so I had to run upstairs, get my niece, and the two of us helped Mum. I think she was horrified at the changes in her grandmother. If we put a deposit on the room today I have to hire movers to move the furniture from here to set up her bedroom and sitting room. And what happens when her money runs out? There is nothing! No medicaid beds in South Carolina once she spends everything she and my Daddy saved. Pray for me, please,Pray for clear guidance.

Well, if you know she will run out of money soon and there will be nowhere for her to live, maybe that's not a good place for her to be. Perhaps you can hire live-in help. Your money will go farther, and I like the suggestion of the nurse on your other blog about baby-proofing your house. Plus, make sure she has what she needs, so she doesn't have to go into the kitchen if it isn't absolutely necessary for her to be there. I don't know what's there in your kitchen, but it sounds dangerous! Also, a lot of people are given walkers when they don't really have the strength to safely use them. Perhaps she should have a wheelchair for when she's not exercising. That could be part of the reason why she fell, and using the wheelchair will make it safer for her. And also, if you didn't know, she needs a room on the ground floor, so that she can move about more easily and if anything should happen it will be easier for the paramedics to help her.

You are all in my prayers, Cheryl. I really do think that Assisted Living is the way to go even if it is expensive. I have always told my Mom that we do not want her to worry about leaving us an inheritance. I think that our parents were raised to believe that leaving their kids money was a "Must do." I do not believe this. She and Dad earned their money and it should be spent on her needs now that Dad is gone. Wouldn't Medicare kick in when her money does run out? I do hope that you find a solution which is good for all of you very soon.

Wow that is quite a monthly fee! I honestly don't know how people afford it, here the cost os covered by insurance. Have you thought of finding a student, for ex nursing student who is looking for work to help out with your mom at your home? I really feel for you, this must be so hard on so many levels. emoticon
