Today was weigh in day for my weight loss challenge at work. We weigh in every Thursday. I was hoping to see a BIG number! After all, I gave up soda. I stayed on track with my food. I exceeded my step goals every day. When the scale flashed 1.8, I must say I was disappointed. I felt I worked harder than a 1.8. I felt Mr Scale was being stingy again.

Last week the person with the highest weight loss lost 5.71%, mine was a mere 1.1% When I started talking to people to see what they were doing to lose weight, people were all over. One was eating 1,200 calories a day and working out for an hour every other day, one was on a liquid diet and walking or riding here bike, another was doing a low fat diet and running, another was eliminating wheat and sugar. Some were going to what I consider extremes. After having been on this path a long time, I am not willing to do that anymore! So I am taking the turtle approach, eating a balanced diet, doing strength training and my walking. I have resigned myself to the fact I will not be the biggest loser.... but I am somewhat competitive and don't want to finish last! I'm completely ok with that. This is just one more thing to help me remain accountable!

Let me back up to last night. I got home from my son's basketball and was relaxing on the couch watching tv when the phone rang. I did not answer it. It went to the machine. It was my friend who I took to the gym asking if I was going to the gym on Thursday. I immediately thought... no way.... have other plans (which I did).

The plan was to meet a different friend for dinner. We were going to a local restaurant. This restaurant operated by a local bakery.... so great desserts are on the menu! I was trying to figure out what I was going to eat to stay on track.... of if I was going to allow myself to splurge a little and get a French dip (my fav there). After all, my silly little sneaky voice said to splurge because I had a whole week to get back on track. Really, I am starting to get that sneaky little voices number! It only took me 59 years!

I thought I'd call the first friend and tell her I had other plans in the morning. Morning rolled around and I got a text from my dinner friend saying she totally forgot that it was her granddaughter's band concert and wondered if we could reschedule. Gee, I've done that before! Of course!

I picked up the phone to tell first friend I had other plans. Even though dinner wasn't going to happen, I had plenty of things I needed to get done before a weekend road trip, like laundry and packing. I dialed her number and she answered. I said "Hey I got your message last night." and out of my mouth popped "sure, I'd love to go to the gym with you". What? Where did that come from? I had other plans!

So, not only am I not going to be tempted by the baked goods and the French dip, I am going to work out for an hour and a half.

Sometimes plans change. Sometimes change is good. That is how it works!

    I am just saying you lost and it counts and shows hard work and that you don't sit on your butt. I am the one if I do the 1200 cals and work out I lose if not I gain. Everybody has there way that works and whatever your doing is working. Better to bring it off slow then fast. The gym was a much better choice. Don`t you feel people take you to places to eat that throw you off track. I do. Now I say OH I cant go there cause nothing I can choose to eat that will keep me on track with my weight loss. Then they say ok you pick the place. emoticon

    That friend who is pushing you to go to the gym when you have other things to do - is a angel in disguise! That sneaky little voice is being quieted by a more powerful guide! Great choices (whether choices or not!) And learning to be a persistent tortoise is not a bad thing. I'm working on that one!! We can do this!!

    I am so proud of you for doing this the right way! All the extremist will look back in 4 years and wonder how they gained so much. That lifestyle is not sustainable. The biggest Winner is the person who endures the race all the way to the finish line! emoticon

    I loved this! Great blog...awe yes living life and as well beating challenges we are faced with. You stick to your plan it is a good one and it will last when others fail. You need to pat yourself and say out loud...I did good! You did!!!! emoticon

    Barb, you know how it works and you are going about it the right way. These uber competitive people are going to extremes to win, but hey are not learning anything and they will go back to their old ways after the challenge - and you know what happens then... Their weight will gradually re-appear. We've been there. But you are the tortoise, slow and steady will win this race. So hang in there. And good for you for getting back to the gym - helping your friend and helping yourself!
