QUOTE OF THE DAY
Chicken enthusiast — The job description for one of the contestants during “The Bachelor” premiere last night.

Okay, I was raised on a farm I should know what / who these people are. But I didn't, so I googled. Thinking someone who loves to eat chicken? The anti-Dare You crowd?

Nope...backyard poultry enthusiasts learning from and enjoying with the flock of folks keeping chickens, ducks, quails...and more, in the city.Promoting and preserving policies that allow backyard poultry and livestock. Reaching out and teaching best practices, and dispelling myths. (Chicken Little? That kind of myth?)

I know these people. My ex-boss now living the rural life on an Avocado farm, the people down the street with their fresh eggs, my nephew up in WA who ate the accidental rooster he bought, friends of friends on their 1/2 acre in small-townish Santee.

I didn't know they had a name. I didn't know it was an occupation. Its everywhere...maybe I need a coop. But memories are flooding back of how much I hated those dreaded words from my Mom or Dad..."go feed the chickens" or "did you collect ALL the eggs today?". Man I hated those chickens. Stupid, stupid and always pecking the hand that feed them.

But maybe...in new light of the clubbiness of being a "chicken enthusiast".... I do eat a lot of chicken. I love eggs...

I have kept chickens for many years in my backyard. They are sweet gardening companions interested in all my doings, and very ornamental. Calming company when I am stressed. Not so much with the eggs, my gals are all rather elderly.

LOL. I would love to have chickens and eat the eggs they lay BUT I could never kill one so I won't. Do people just keep them even after their egg laying days? I am probably very naïve about this.

    Love the "accidental rooster" concept.

Have a girlfriend who swears her chickens are "pets" that greet her by hopping up on her outstretched arm when she gets home at night: and none of them is a candidate for the accidental rooster fate (although she DOES eat eggs!!)

Hahaha, that would describe me! I'm allowed 2 chickens in my backyard. When I complete my backyard project, a coop and 2 chickens will be involved!

don't know if I could "do" farm life. I actually live in a suburban area, but just right outside my little "enclave" it is rural . . . . lots and lots of dairy farms, llama farms, goat farms and yes, chicken farms too!
