Another update on Bruno.

Wednesday, September 02, 2015

Recently I had some lovely comments on my last update and I realized it had been quite a while since I had written that! So here is yet another update. The old boy is totally unsteady in the back legs and now beginning to get unsteady in the front ones as well! Sometimes, I will set him back up when the back legs collapse and his front ones will fold up! Poor boy! But let me tell you, if you have food, he's right there, even if it's only an expression! He cannot get up on his own at all anymore. He is very interested in his meals and everybody else's!! hehe
DH is looking on line for some kind of harness we can get him to help him when we take him out to do his business and can just help him around the house, get a drink of water, etc. without falling down every whipstitch!! He can be up and around some on his own, but if he gets off the rug ( I have bought a bunch of cheap rugs and runners for him)or if he tries to change direction too tight, he goes down. And to lay down on purpose, he can't control a nice circle and fold as a young dog would do. He sort of sways till he easily goes down and then he's good for a nap! hehe Sometimes, though, his falls find him with his legs going in all directions! Poor thing! He seems to have NO pain, though. He has watery eyes, which I think is sometimes crying with possible discomfort, but he never whines or cries aloud, so I think he's doing fairly well! Yes, he is still on his Prednisone, same dose. He did develop a pressure sore on one front elbow. Doc stapled it closed and I clean it with H2O2 and change the dressing about every other day. (It was daily the first week, but it's soooo much better now. I really only change it to keep it padded against getting bad again!)He takes an antibiotic to help all that heal, too.
So this is my Bruno's present condition! I still have my boy. He still tries to be my shadow. He sleeps most of the morning, but in the evening, after supper, he wants to get around! The last 2 nights, after his evening meds and last trip out with his 2-legged brother to pee, he brings himself ( under his own steam) right on into my bedroom to see me!! Of course I put his blankie on my bed and bring him right up with me!! He'll spend 30 to 60 minutes with me till he's ready to go to bed on his own beddie. He's so sweet! I am soooo blessed to still have my best friend still with me. DH is finding all kinds of possible harnesses that may help us help our boy. YAY!!
If you are surprised we still have my boy, Bruno, you are not alone! My DS had his birthday on August 26 and he really wanted Bruno to survive beyond his day so that he would not remember losing him every year on his own birthday! Well, ok. I guess I get that. But Bruno is not yet ready to go, so we're taking it one day at a time. As long as he doesn't seem to be suffering, is still interested in food and can still manage to do his business when taken out side, we are good to go.
Thank you for all your interest and comments and prayers. We appreciate you all more than you'll ever, ever know!! Bruno says "Keep movin'!" (((HUGS)))

My goodness Jayne, I can't believe I never saw this post. I'm so very sorry about Bruno. I know how hard it is to see your "best friend" deteriorate until he/she can't make it on their own. Thank God you still have him and you still bring each other joy & unconditional love! My prayers are with you both! Thank you for sharing my friend!

We had a dog that lived to be over 17 before we had to put him down. Our vet recommended "towel walking". It worked well. I did end up carrying him most places and he was just under 60 pounds. He was my baby though. Best wishes!

It can be such a challenge to be there for our pets when they are on the decline. I'm sure Bruno appreciates all of your efforts!

I'm so glad Bruno is still going. He sounds so sweet. I had a Border Collie years back with back leg problems like that when he got old, he was a wonderful dog too! Give Bruno a hug & kiss for me!!

I am so sorry to hear about Bruno, I have been out of touch with everyone lately. Our Bob sort of had the same problem as he got older, he had severe arthritis in his hips so that he could not get up or down very easily. We bought him some booties, they did help him quite a bit, although he really did not like them at first. You are welcome to them as they are just sitting in a closet collecting dust, would love to see them help someone such as Bruno...please let me know. Many prayers coming your way for Bruno, you and your husband. It is so difficult sometimes when these furbabies get up in years, however we do everything we can for them. Hugs Kelly
