Two months out of the loop

Wednesday, August 05, 2015

Two months ago, on June 5th, I fell in a church parking lot and fractured my shoulder. I have worn an immobilizing sling 24 hours a day since then. Six weeks ago I had shoulder surgery. I started physical therapy two weeks ago...painful but necessary. Thankfully I bought some loose fitting elastic waist clothing before surgery. I am becoming more self sufficient daily. My husband works hard to try to be a good caregiver, and I have hired a helper three times a week. If you are like me, you take your health for granted until something like this happens in your life. Next week I have permission to start to go back to the warm water pool for some lap walking and some very gentle exercises in the water I can't wait!

I have really missed being present on spark people, and I have missed my spark friends. Little by little I will be returning to my computer.

Today would have been my mom's 88th birthday, and I know she would want me to be taking care of myself.as soon as possible. I am pushing myself in honor of her memory.

I just read this and I am so sorry to hear of your fall and shoulder fracture. I saw that you had had surgery but I didn't know it was from a fall. I hope things get better every day and you will be back in full swing soon! Big hugs!

Yes, we do take what we can do for granted until we can't do it. But sometime we need rest. But you are on the mend and that is great.

So sorry to hear about your accident. Make sure to follow the therapist and doctor's orders. You don't want to do any additional damage by pushing too soon. Glad you are well enough to be thinking of the water though. Sending positive thoughts your way.

I broke my left humorus on Oct 30 2013, and remember how difficult everything was, I live by myself. I found out how wonderful some of my neighbors are! Several of them took me grocery shopping for several weeks. One neighbor and his 2 teenage kids shovel my sidewalk and parking area all winter (only light lifting for several months) Shoveling snow is impossible one handed. Afterward, I made a huge batch of my chocolate peanut cluster and gave some to everyone who helped. It seemed so little to do for all the help they had all been. and they all told me that I didn't have to give them anything for what they did.

I can understand your concerns. I had surgery on my hand a couple years ago and had to learn to eat left handed. I could not work buttons, snaps, zippers, or hooks - makes it very hard to get dressed. Thank heavens for elastic and pull on clothes.

I am still in the middle of therapy for knee replacement. Keep up the exercises, because they are worth it in the long run.

"In a New York minute, everything can change" are watch words I now live by. You are so right when you say we take things for granted. I am so sorry for your accident but glad to hear you are on the road back to restored health. Enjoy the pool and let us know how you are doing as you are able. emoticon

Dear Evelyn, I am so sorry for this very difficult year for you... This was really the last in a series of terrible times, and I wish I could give you a huge hug! I can imagine how much you must be looking forward to going back to your beloved swimming pool, and doing simple things like being on the computer.
Take good care of yourself, you are a special Sparkfriend and I am really sad of all you are going through.

Evelyn, I had no idea that this is what happened to you. My goodness, what frustrating weeks you must have had. So glad to hear that you are on the mend and can soon take up some old activities you so love.
My best wishes for your recovery. Easy does it. You don't want to regret any false move. Happy to hear you are considering going back to the pool. It will feel so good to get moving again.

Evelyn, I am so glad you are starting to recover somewhat. It is very difficult to lose our mobility -- it certainly has been difficult for me. I am glad you will be able to exercise a bit in the pool. And that you can dress yourself. (It took me a while to be able to get and out of the shower without assistance)

I often think of things that my mom or dad would love to hear about. They surrounded us with love and caring while they were alive; even if the end was difficult, the years and years of love shine through.

Hugs and best wishes for continues healing,
    Alison

Really good to see you back. I'm glad that things are going well and that you are able to start back at the pool. Keep up the physio; it's definitely worth it.

I know how much you must be missing your mother. My mum's birthday was April 26. There are so many times I wish I could talk to her. So many questions I didn't ask. I hope she knew how much I loved her.

    Hugs, Gail
