We traveled from the St. Clair River on the East side Michigan over to Holland, Michigan which is on the western side of Michigan on Lake Michigan. We have friends here that we wanted to visit while we were in this area. One day Jeff and Kathy took us out to the beach here in Holland. Lake Michigan is very large so when you are on the beach looking out across the water it actually looks like the ocean.
Here is a picture of a lighthouse at the State Park.
They also took us to the sand dunes here on Lake Michigan. This picture was taken from the top looking down to the water.
We had to walk up lots of stairs to get to the top of the dunes. This is our friend, Jeff, on the stairs. As you can see the sand from the dunes covers the steps at times. It is constantly blowing and shifting.

The novelty shirts here will often show a picture on the front of the t-shirt with a picture of Lake Michigan and an inscription saying, "No sharks, No sand, No worries".
On another day we traveled a little further south to the town of Saugatuck. It sits at the mouth of the Kalamazoo River and is considered "The Art Coast of Michigan". There are lots of quaint shops to explore in Saugatuck and this little river resort town is so pretty! We walked the downtown shopping area and stopped for an ice cream cone before heading back to Holland.
Our friends, Jeff and Kathy, gave us a tour of Holland and stopped at a manufacturing company that makes the blades for wind turbines. We have seen lots of them in our travels through the Eastern side of the U.S., especially along the mountain ridges in Pennsylvania. Here are a couple of pictures to show you the enormity of the size of these blades.
Our friend, Jeff, is what we would call "a tall drink of water" back home. He is tall so you can see by his height just how wide these blades are at the base.
Of course, our visit here would not be complete without a trip to Grand Rapids for some "window shopping" at Cabellas.
We will be leaving here next week....destination to be announced later!
