On the Value of a Friendly Gesture

Wednesday, June 24, 2015

This morning I was ten minutes late getting to work due to a traffic backup. I was carrying in a heavy box. The branch overhanging the parking spot I used snagged my hair as I got out of the car. Not my best morning. As I was trudging into the building, one of our delivery trucks went by and the driver smiled and waved at me and hollered, "Have a nice day". I waved back and hollered, "Thanks, you too". At that instant I realized I was smiling. The box didn't feel as heavy. I stopped thinking mean thoughts about the branch. If I see that driver this afternoon when he returns from his route, I doubt he will even remember that he waved and greeted me. Yet look at the change his friendly greeting had for me!

I think we sometimes forget how our attitudes can affect others, even strangers.

Your blog kind of goes along with something I experienced today. While waiting for the bus to go home after getting my lab work done, I had been looking forward to doing some reading while waiting, but instead, an elderly woman who was also waiting for a ride started talking to me. At first, I admit to feeling kind of disappointed about not being able to spend that time reading, but as I talked with her, I realized she was probably very lonely, and didn't get out much, or have many visitors. She was telling me about an aide worker she was having problems with, and how the stress from that led to an ER visit at 4am this morning. I realized then, what she probably needed most was for someone to just listen to her, and I was glad I was able to do that for her. I told her when I had to leave to get on the bus, that I would pray for her, and I really did send up a prayer for her. I hope I that I had a positive impact on her day, as she did on mine.
