Yoda Was Wrong

Monday, June 22, 2015

Sooo ... that Yoda dude said, "Do, or do not. There is no try."

Uhm ... yes there is a "try." Or rather ... a TRI!!!

I did my first triathlon just over a couple weeks ago. It was a short triathlon, but still a triathlon. Since it was my first attempt at one I decided to go with a modified Sprint distance.

1/4 mile swim - 12 mile bike - 5K run

I have my times listed somewhere, but that's not what was important. What was important was that I finished it! Wooohoo. I didn't drown on the swim - major accomplishment if I do say so myself.

Now that I have that goal completed what's next?

Well ... MORE triathlons of course!!!

We had 1 day to rest and celebrate - then it was back to training. I say "we" because I joined a group of people that train together. Some are experienced, some are newbies (like me). But none of that matters as everyone is super supportive. In fact, the best thing about doing these triathlons is the training. The group has fun doing runs, swims, and bike riding together. We push each other, but mostly we encourage, laugh, and have fun.

Next up is a "normal" Sprint distance ... the swim is 1/2 mile. That one's in July. Then in August I'm aiming for an Olympic distance version. (Swim 1 mile / Bike 25 miles / Run 10K)

Ohhhh and of course I can't forget to mention - FREE BEER after the race! Wooohooo.

Oh yeah, I got a finisher medal too :-)

So yeah - Yoda was wrong ... Tri ... just Tri.

I love the medal!!! I am looking at trying a tri, with the same breakdown of each event, next summer. Now that I've read how much you enjoyed it, I'll have to look at it a little more seriously.

P.S. Love the "time isn't important" part! It took me a while to figure that ou!

    Greg,

Cool beans, man! Nice race bling! I am in awe of your determination. The group you are with sounds perfect. Everybody was a beginner, once. I am glad you are getting some pointers.

What is next? An aero-frame carbon tri-bike? Wind tunnel aero work! 1,000 laps a week at a local pool?

    Thanks, Bruce

    Hi Greg,

That sounds like the perfect group to train with. How did you find them? I'm sure it's not just more fun, but also a lot more productive as far as your training! You have good goals set up and I look forward to hearing updates about it.

Nice play on words too... Yoda... I was wondering what this was about when I saw the title... very clever.

Awesome "metal"!!! Congrats on finishing! I like training with a group too, keeps you motivated to "tri" harder. haha See what I did there?

Good Luck on your continued training! The distances are pretty impressive!
