A wonderful weekend in Duluth, Two Harbors and Gooseberry Falls.

Tuesday, May 26, 2015

We decided to head North for the weekend which was the right place to be since it was cold and rainy here in the Twin Cities for some of the time. Up north however, the sun was shining and we were able to walk for miles and spend lots of fun times just being together.
Here are a few pics of the good times we had.

This is the lighthouse in the Canal area of Duluth. This is a huge shipping port with thousands of ships coming in each year.

The lift bridge where the ships enter to unload whatever it is they are carrying.

It was my husband's birthday on Saturday so we celebrated that while we were there.

Lake Superior is so huge.

Me and my girls!

I thought these seagulls were funny all walking in a row.

Lots of sail boats were out this weekend as the water was so smooth.

On Sunday, we took a trip up to Gooseberry State Park where they have the most beautiful falls. My hubby and I were there last year for the changing of the leaves colors but thought it would be fun to go back again this time of year. They all went rock climbing as I watched and took pics.

And then we decided to go a little further North to Split Rock Light house.
This is no longer a working lighthouse but served to steer many ships away from treacherous rocks and cliffs in the earlier years. It is a very cold place to be but the lighthouse keepers lived here for many years and seemed to enjoy it. It is now owned by the State and is a historical sight.

The stairs leading up to the lighthouse.

I cannot imagine this gave off that much heat for as cold as this area gets in the winter.

The view from above.

The water was so clear below.

And one last stop at Two Harbors.
I love this picture because it really shows the vastness of the water. It is hard to see where the sky ends and the water begins. My husband is from Greece so this always reminds him of the sea.

We had a wonderful time and the weather cooperated for a change. Duluth can be 20 degrees cooler than where we live on any given day so we felt very fortunate to have 2 great days.
Thanks for walking along with me. I hope you enjoyed it!
Spark on!

Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos: you have really captured the beauty of that area. We loved to visit Duluth and Gooseberry Falls when we lived in Minnesota, and this brings back some great memories. You all look like you were having a marvelous time together.

Wow! I have to say I really enjoyed reading your blog! I read your post on Connie's page (we are long time friends) and since I was born and raised in Michigan, I had to read your blog about the Great Lakes area. Our family used to go camping every summer somewhere in Michigan, and the Great Lakes were a huge part of my growing up! Beautiful pictures! I had so much fun and seeing your pictures brought back so many good memories! Thanks for sharing with us! emoticon emoticon

I've spent just a little bit of time in Minnesota, but I'm originally from Chicago, so I don't remember the cold being all that shocking emoticon I'm so glad to hear that you guys had great weather to enjoy!

Holly these are beautiful pictures of that neck of the north land area. So true about the water and the sky looking like they are almost one and the same. I remember coming up over the hill ( coming down from the iron range ) and seeing that sight, almost made me dizzy until you got the eyes adjusted to the beauty of the two blending. The horse and carriage, I had forgotten Duluth having them, probably since they weren't around years ago. In fact, they really cleaned up the canal park area some years ago which has brought tourism back to the area big time. Glad yu all had a wonderful weekend and enjoy this week of vacation---hope it clears up Wednesday for all of us.

Wow- you did a lot in those days up there!! It did bring back special memories for me..especially the Split Rock LH...it was my first and only LH I went up in. It isn't as tall as the one in FL that we have been to and now I cannot go up in them due to my bad knees. Such a beautiful area for sure. I regret we didn't have time to go to the Falls...that trip was spur of the moment from our main trip to Minneapolis . and we wanted to see the LH, since never seen one before. I have a fear of heights and coming down those open stairs was terrifying...had to be helped and was really slow. emoticon
I always thought that bridge in Duluth was the coolest looking bridge!!
That is one thing I loved living near the Great Lakes -- they are so big, you feel like you are on the ocean!! Thanks so much for sharing your vacation with us and loved the pics...you all looked great!! emoticon emoticon
