Had an eye opening experience!

I work in a very busy hospital in a very busy MRI department. For the last 2 days, by the time I got home, I had in over 10,000 steps and 4.5 or 5 miles in depending on the day. I have 2 phones on my ears somedays at the same time, people that are calling my name, drs that need something and many patients that I get ready and IV's put in for the MRI. Because I am the supervisor, I don't actually get to scan very often, instead I am the air traffic controller of the department. When I get home from work on some days, I am mentally and physically drained.
For the last 2 evenings, I just decided I couldn't go for my evening walk, I really just needed to rest and recoup and just let my body relax.
So tonight, I really wanted to go for a walk, but the rain kept me inside. I decided that is ok, I haven't run on the treadmill for a while, that would be a nice thing to do. Down to the basement I went.
I started running, and of course, your lungs and legs start protesting but I push through it and finally I find my groove. And that is when I had such an eye opening experience.
I really missed my walks/runs these last 2 evenings. I really needed the rest that I let myself have but my body really needs exercise to be able to release all the stress of the day and all of a sudden, I felt so good, I didn't feel tired any more, I forgot I had a mild headache that has been nagging me all day. I forgot everything except how good it felt to just be running and pushing my muscles and just feeling how my body responds to that. I could feel all the stress of this very busy week just slide away the further and the faster I ran. I would have liked to have been outside doing this and just letting the fresh air hit me, but somedays it just doesn't matter where you are as long as you are doing it.
I guess I can say that I am addicted to exercise and how it makes me feel. And that feeling is strong!
Let's get out there and let our bodies feel strong!

    I know what you mean Holly...I feel alive when I exercise, especially outside!! Recently my shoulder was aching and head was starting to ache. Since I have been ill and on antibiotics, haven't been doing the exercise like normal. I turned on my music and did some chair exercise, just to loosen me up and then did the stretching and do you know that achiness left and I felt so much better! I try to now do that everyday. Hopefully I will be back to my walks and biking sooner than later!! I hate being cooped up sick and all!!!
    Thanks for all your inspiring blogs and your support. Maybe one day you can retire early or change jobs to a less stressful atmosphere. But, at least you have your exercise to help with the stress!! emoticon

    I was thinking the same thing today when I took the dogs for a walk. It was kind of blah outside, and I was feeling kind of blah but I decided to go anyway. About a 1/4 of the way through I started feeling better and by the time I got back I was feeling energized. I can imagine that your job is very stressful just trying to keep track of so many things at once! Maybe you could also get a professional massage every once in awhile for a splurge/ reward.

    emoticon ....Today I felt so tired.....But got in the pool at gym;; did water aerobics and combined dancing .......... It felt wonderful and now I feel relaxed and refreshed .......... emoticon

    I agree completely. I am a morning exerciser, but if I can get in an evening walk after work it does wonders for my energy and attitude!

    I wish I could say I was a daily exerciser, but I definitely am not! :( I was really inspired to start walking more during the week (I usually do one big hike at the weekend, one long walk in the woods during the week, sometimes 2, and that's it). I think a 30-minute walk every night would really do me good and help with the stress too. Although the stress I cope with is very different from yours, it does wake me up during the night often... I was amazed when I was in Burgundy how much better I slept, and that was because I was "away from it all"!
    Thank you Holly for being such a great Sparkfriend, such an inspiration, and for having transformed your life so completely it shows us we can achieve it too if we set our mind to do it and work hard at it like you do.

    So true! Especially when spring/summer weather is here, a brisk walk outdoors after work really does wonders, even when I don't really feel like doing it!

    I have found how comforting exercise can be too. It really is something that I miss if I miss it too. Even strength training I enjoy the warm glow from it and the feeling of empowerment

    I am the same way. I feel so much better when I exercise after a stressful day. I am glad you worked out and felt better. You have a demanding job. That is a healthy addiction! I am with you. emoticon

    Holly that is wonderful. I realized this last week that I really need my morning walk and an evening walk is an extra blessing for me. I've been walking around my house to get in my steps, but it's not the same as pounding the turf outside. Glad you got your eyes opened and opened ours too. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

    If getting exercise done after a long tough day, by all means go for it. We all react a certain way to a stressful day, but all the better when you know how much better you feel getting some type of run in.
    For me, I always feel more upbeat, and invigorated after some sort of exercise, but there are those days that my body just needs to cool it. That being said I did do a 30 minute water routine in the indoor pool at the hotel we are at for the night. After in the car for over 500+ miles today, I got in the room and suited up and headed for the pool---it would have been so easy to just sit and chill, but was determined. We can do this.

    I feel the same! I need to exercise (a little for my physical health, but a LOT for my mental health). It's an awesome free medication that doesn't need a prescription!
