On conquering anxiety at the gym

Friday, April 24, 2015

I posted this at the xxfitness subreddit not long ago and it got so much love, I thought I would share it here.

I joined my local gym about a year ago. For the first several months I stayed in the cardio area and took classes. I really wanted to venture out into the weight area, but like many, was nervous that I would embarrass myself or look like I didn't know what I was doing. It didn't help that then, at that time of the day (5:30 a.m.) there weren't any other women in the weight room.

I did a little research and came up with a full body routine and headed out into the gym with my head held high pretending like I wasn't nervous. Over the next 6 or so months, I became friends with all the guys and gained confidence in the gym. I even started squatting in the rack! It wasn't without it's embarrassment. I've bumped my head on equipment (more than once) and tripped. Guess what? We all laughed and I survived.

Two weeks ago, I started the strong curves program. I was really nervous to do some of the moves in the gym. No one else was doing them. They seem so "girly". The first day I could not believe how my heart was racing as I drug a mat over in front of the dumbbell rack to start my glute bridges. But I did it. And the next day and the next day. One day during my glute marches, one of the guys teasingly yelled across the gym, "That isn't even working out, Amanda!" I smile and fire back with, "Oh yeah? Then come do it, tough guy!"

I guess what I'm trying to relay is that if you want to go to the gym, do it. Do not let your head get in the way of achieving your goals. It is so worth it! Now when I pick up weights, or I see the definition in my arms, I am so proud that I got out of my comfort zone and challenged myself to do something that I was scared of.

It feels amazing, ladies!

I know, just imagine my fear when I try to work out-I am overweight(unlike you) and have 2 left feet-and no rhythm-it's not a pretty site. The gym would probably pay me not to join (LOL) Best of luck staying healthy!!!!
