Adventures in Grocery Land - Shopping with my eyes closed.

The other day I went shopping to pick up some snack substitutions (ie: fruits and veggies to replace my weaknesses). Actually 2 different stores with the same pitfalls.

As I entered the store the first thing I see was a a landmine of temptation. Pop (what many of you call soda), chips, crackers and candy. Oh my! So I averted my eyes and moved on. Fortunately just around the corner was the produce section. Yum. I scooped up my apples, berries, grapes,oranges,and sweet potatoes. As I was browsing the bagged salads I spied that not only were the salads on sale but I also had a $1 off coupon from the grocer AND sitting on a little table next to the display were cherub tomatoes with a sign that they were FREE with purchase of 2 bags of salad. What a deal!! So for $4 I got 2 bags of salad and 10.5 oz. of little tomatoes. SCORE !!

Carry on...picked up my tart cherry juice from the organic section and a box of shredded wheat cereal. I am feeling rather good that my cart was filling up with everything that would help meet my needs, but I have only just begun to traverse the store. I turned my head as I scurried past the bakery with its tempting looking pastries and head down the aisle toward the pop section. I had a coupon for $1 off-2 A&W/7up "10" products and they were on sale. hey for 39 cents per 2 liter I will buy, pop is not a trigger for me at all.

As I approached the section I spy a sea of pastels. Pastel packaging for all the Easter candy and other spring goodies. Three entire aisles and end-caps of temptation. A bomb of color to lure me into its traps. Peeps, chocolate eggs, Reese's, Milky way....and on and on. What an assault. Not only are we bombarded at the check-outs but throughout the entire store. My first instinct is to RUN! instead I turned my eyes toward the meat section just to avoid these traps and walk quickly till I reached my destination.

The Dairy section. This has its share of pitfalls besides the puddings and chocolate milks. It is the benign Yogurt section with the syrupy sweet innocent looking yogurts. I read the labels and selected Greek yogurts that were within my parameters. I had a coupon for what looked to be a luxury brand so okay lets have a look-see. I knew even before I looked at the nutrition info of this 4 oz yogurt that it was Unacceptable. I picked it up and my fingers were sticking to the packaging!! It literally had so much syrup that it had oozed onto the packaging. Back it went and the coupon with it. (I left it for someone else)

Across from the dairy were bags of chips, donuts, cupcakes and cookies. Run, do not walk, RUN!

Last stop frozen veggies. Do you think they would have a sensible food across from the veggies?? NO WAY. Try ice cream, frozen confections and at the ends- peanut butter pretzels and More candy. Truly how much candy and snacks is enough? Rose, make your selection and don't look over there.

Back to the check-outs. Chips, snacks and cookies one side, candy and pop on the other. God please help me. (He did).

Even though I left with crossed-eyes and a krink in my neck, I escaped two stores in one day with only foods that would heal me,not kill me.

    I like to look at the conveyer belt with all my choices displayed for the week. I think 65% produce and fruits, 10% poultry, fish or meat, 10% whole grain carbs, 10% frozen veggies, 5% dairy. Just imagine a giant healthy dinner plate with a side salad and fruit for dessert.
    I just had an afternoon snack with raspberries, pichuberries (from Columbia) and some apple slices. Healthy decadence.

    I've taken to avoiding large parts of the grocery store but you're right, it's hard. They know just how to get our attention and tempt us with things we don't want or need.

    I often feel the same way when I shop. Too much "not good for me food" there. However today as I did my shopping with my hubby, we amazed ourselves how much "good food" we had in the basket. We made good healthy choices as you did. I do love using coupons to help save on the cost of groceries these days.

    lol...it was like I was there....and look....you 'Rose' to the occasion. Couldn't resist...good job!! Here's to the small steps that get us to our goals! emoticon
