It's February?

Sunday, February 01, 2015

I can't believe it's February already. Like many people, I find the beginning of the month a good time to review and renew. In January, I decided to take a few small actions towards feeling good. I'm really pleased with how I stuck with those actions in January. Usually I lose interest fairly quickly, but this time was different. I felt myself wanting to abandon things the last couple of days, which I think signals that it's time to shake things up to renew my interest.

In January my goals were to get at least 6 hours of sleep every work night, bring a lunch to work every day, eat breakfast at home every day and dress well for work every day. I nailed it on the sleep and the dressing well. I bought my lunch only twice this month -- I'm super pleased with that. I bought breakfast only once this month -- again, very pleased with that. And on top of that, we ate dinner at home every night but one this month (ordered a pizza last night).

I like to determine what things helped me be successful, and what things hindered success. Digging really deep, the two things that really drove me to being able to stick with it this month were:

1. Knowing how I want to feel. I could always ask myself "if I do this, am I going to feel the way I want to feel?" And if the answer was "no", I could talk to myself further about whether I really wanted to do it.
2. Choosing actions that were fairly small and not tied to an outcome. Since I didn't have a goal to lose a certain amount of weight, or stick within a calorie range or eliminate or restrict certain kinds of food, or anything like that, I was free to meet my goals in whatever way made the most sense and made me feel best.

Other things (like pre-making and freezing bunch of food for meals and choosing my clothes the night before) made a huge difference. But the reason I was consistent in doing those things was because I was clear on how I wanted to feel and free to make choices that allowed me to feel those feelings. So that turned the idea of spending an hour or two a week preparing meals from being a chore or an obligation into a choice. Being flexible allowed me to meet my goals in different ways, without feeling like a failure.

What could have made things even better? Giving myself more time. I am not a morning person and will generally wait until the last possible minute to get out of bed, which means I'm in a rush all the time in the mornings. So I need to examine that one. How do I create more space and time for myself so I can feel calm and have the time to take care of myself well.

On to February. I have a whole bunch of things I want to do swirling around in my head. And I know myself well enough to pick just one to add to my list of actions. The one thing I'm adding for February is to deliberately move my body every day. It doesn't matter for how long or what the movement is, but I will deliberately move my body every day.

I'd love to hear what everyone else has planned for February.
