We can be the change.

Sunday, November 09, 2014

What does that mean exactly?
Does it mean that we can change ourselves? Yes
Is change hard? Yes
Is change the way we have to live every single day? Not necessarily.
Is the change a lifestyle- Absolutely!
So the question is, can You be the change?
That my dear friends is totally up to you and only you.
Almost 2 and 1/2 years ago, I stumbled upon this awesome site. I had lost weight before, I had recently tried weight watchers and had lost 5 lbs but I found it very easy to cheat on their way of calculating so it didn't work for me but I know others have had great success with it so to each their own. If it works for you, use it!
I tried SP and liked what I saw. I met a few good people the first few months and let them guide me along. That was really instrumental in my journey here.
So if you find a new member and friend them, that is the best thing that you could ever do!
I started measuring and weighing my portions and was extremely surprised at how much I was really eating in a day.
I couldn't quite believe that instead of eating a cup by eyeballing it, I was probably eating double that. Weighing and measuring is really important in the first months and years of losing and tracking is vital.
I had cardio machines that were in my downstairs family room collecting dust. I moved them around and found my ipod, and decided I could do this. I could be my own change. Nobody else was going to do it for me.
I wanted to lose weight for a few reasons. I wanted to feel better and I wanted to look better. The pics tell the story in so many ways and when you look at pictures and your first thought is "oh, I need to throw that picture away!" Don't do it. Decide you want to be the change and then stick to it.
Is it easy? Heck no! There are days that you will want to quit. There are days that you are going to say this just isn't worth it. I miss bread, I miss pizza, I miss Big Macs! I know, I was there. But I liked the way my waist was getting smaller much more than the taste of the crappy food!
It is a daily fight, but at some point, your body starts craving the healthy food. When I haven't had a salad for a couple of days, I crave it like crazy. I eat fruit and veggies daily. I pack my lunch and have a nutritious breakfast every day before I leave for work because my days are crazy and once I get there, I need to go full speed ahead and lunch doesn't come around for several hours.
So ask yourself, can I be the change? Yes Yes Yes! Find a way, small steps every day and find a way to be the change. To be healthy. To be active. To be the best that you can be.
One day at a time, one choice at a time, one exercise at a time! Be the change.
Spark on!

emoticon emoticon I am still a work in progress, but I know what you are talking about. Eating those crappy foods, even when I give in and eat them after being away from them, is not the same. You feel bloated, almost sick when eating them. Yuck!! It is not easy, for sure, and we should never give up no matter what. Because if we did, we would lose any momentum we had and have to start all over. Those bad days teach us lessons and each day can be better than the last. You are an inspiring friend, thank you for all your support and friendship! You are the emoticon emoticon emoticon

You are so right! If I don't do it, it doesn't happen. Each of us must fight the battle ourselves. Happily, we have support and examples and lots of data to help us. But if we don't make that choice, none of the rest works! You are so inspiring. Another GREAT blog!

Awesome blog Holly. Each of us can only make the change for oneself. Each and every small step leads to help make changes.
I too was doing weight watches, it helped with seeing how to eat smaller amounts, so I was tracking both there and on Spark People. Finally realized I need to eat less than what sparks recommends for me and can deal that so dropped Weight watchers since there a money to pay for that site and totally back just happy using SP.for free . It is great having all the friends giving support, have made many fine people on this site, one which is you Holly. It may take me the rest of my life to get to where I want to be, but Spark People and my spark friends will be there for me.

Holly - your right ! I BELIEVE :) in you too ! - many times I do not want to get out bed to exercise - or do not want to bother with weighting , measuring food but , after while it starts to be fun - for me I like to incorporate the nutritional values of the edibles ( mini personal challenge ) - do my numbers match everyday - no - but at least I try !

What a great blog, and all so true. I have to remember, *ONLY* I can be the change. No one else can do it for me. Although it sure does help to have friends here on SP, and knowing they're in my corner cheering.

Thanks for sharing this great blog!

I actually have really enjoyed discovering what works for ME (not what works for any program) by trying on different systems and keeping what works from each. From WW, I discovered the fail-proof way of getting 1 serving which is to measure, from OA I learned the importance of bringing the spiritual dimension into the task and from many other plans I have learned what works for me protein, carb and fat wise each day. SP helped me to stick to it and track exercise and the No S Plan (my latest re-discovery) is putting some eating disciplines around all of it. Bit by bit I have discovered what is working and not working with my highly idiosyncratic self and in the process lost 15 pounds. If I can continue to lose half to one pound per week, I know it's doing something great for my long term success.

What solid, common sense advice, Holly!

We each have to be the change for ourselves. I, too, have been down this road more times than I'd care to admit. I'm hoping (counting on!) this being the last time I am working to lose weight. This time I'm working towards a point in my life where I can maintain my weight. I know that will be a challenge, but I'm up for it.

Yes. It's the small steps. Whatever they are...do it for you.

You are an inspiration to me in how you maintain your weight. You efforts show in all the best ways.
