A Football Field for an M&M?!

Sunday, August 31, 2014

So the other day I was reading a health article that talked about exercise. It's main premise was that you can't out-exercise a bad diet. In other words, when it comes to weight loss, diet is 80% of the equation, 10% is exercise, 5% is getting lots of water, and 5% is getting enough sleep.

I agreed with all of that, but then it went on to give an example of eating an M&M candy. It said, for ONE M&M candy (not a bag -- just one piece) an average-sized person would have to briskly walk the length of a football field with the end-zones included. That's a total of 120 yards for one tiny piece of chocolate! OMG!!! I had never thought of it like that! But it gets better, for one chip (like a Dorito), you would double that and have to walk a football field and back!

My heart sank when I read this. It sure made me realize how often I can tack on extra calories with just a few of these, and a handful of thoseā€¦ It makes it especially hard when you have little kids (like I do) to be vigilant when getting their snacks or lunches ready. It is so easy to eat a chip when you are pouring some in a ziplock baggie for their snack/lunch.

I sure won't look at M&M's or Doritos in the same way again!
