Volunteering on the weekend
Wednesday, August 27, 2014
I have heard it before. "When you volunteer some of your time, you are not just giving out, but you will receive much more in return." I knew that of course. I have volunteered in many capacities before - Sunday School teacher, Nursery babysitter, Pioneer Boys, Prayer and Healing Rooms at church. United Way at work, etc. etc.
Well I just had that reinforced last weekend. We went for the first time to a Retirement Home in our community to have a Hymn Sing. We were invited, and about 9 or 10 of us went along with two fellows playing the guitar to keep us all together. We were by no means professional or even studied singers. (We practiced twice). We just like to sing and if we don't particularly feel like we like the older hymns, we knew that they would like it. We were given a hymn book and some of us did not know the hymns at all.
Do you know that there were so many people singing along and we had so many comments afterwards. "Please come back" and "we enjoyed it so much." And sadly, "Not many churches do this any more"
An hour of our time was spent in that Retirement Home and we came away positively glowing. We went to fill an older person's life and to sing praises to our God. In turn it was we who received much, much more.
If you are not doing it yet....Consider volunteering in your community, whether its singing, or doing errands or whatever you enjoy doing.
