Lunch on the Verandah

Saturday, August 23, 2014

Over the last few years my sister and I have done a road trips to the shore for her birthday. This year was a bit different as she has some mobility issues. Since I am the instigator, I plot out the day.
First stop was for lunch in Rhode Island on the Verandah overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Since it was a birthday treat we had (the best ever) clam chowder with crispy pancetta. I don't know if the salt air and the sounds of the ocean waves made it taste better. But I want to go back. Here's my sister:

Then we were in luck the Coast Guard's Eagle was in port in New London and went up on deck.

Did a little bit of shopping and comparing of clam cakes (fritters). One batch was decent in Mystic, another we sampled in Madison we threw out. Last stop for food was a divine Connecticut lobster roll at:

Now all of this may seem a bit decadent, and it is as I am not accustomed to cream, fried stuff and melted butter. (And I did pay for my indulgence the next day.) But on the ride home my sister and I discussed what we would have eaten in the past. We would have gotten our own orders of clam cakes instead of sharing like we did. We would have had soda. instead of the water that we did.

We weren't perfect with our choices, but we were much better than we had been in the past and still enjoyed the day, sometimes less is more.

Sounds like a great day - and you did really good sharing the food as opposed to past habits. See how far you've come and you probably felt better for it!

Great blog - made me smile for you.
