Summer, Ugh!

Sunday, July 13, 2014

Exercising in the Summer is really hard for me. I don't like the heat. It drains me, and definitely interferes with my performance, not to mention my motivation to even get moving.

There's a pool at my apartment building, but it is small and generally occupied by squealing kids during the hours I might use it. So I mostly use the pool for a quick dip to cool off, or an activity my daughter and I can share in the heat. It's not really an option for a workout.

I don't belong to a gym. I don't want to spend the money, when most of the year I am able to work out well without one.

Those are my obstacles. Of course, I won't let them defeat me.

Here's what I'm trying this Summer, subject to further modifications, as we go along:

1. Early morning yoga. I get up a little early and dive into my yoga practice before getting ready for work. I'm enjoying this more than I thought I would, though I'm still not sold on morning activity.

2. A short evening work out. The rest of the year, I like to do an hour or more in the evening. However, waiting until it cools off enough to do a full hour work out was running havoc on my sleep this year. Somehow a short workout doesn't bother me as much, as long as the worst of the day's heat has passed. So, I'm doing only about half an hour in the evening: ten minutes of ST and 25 minutes or so of cardio.

All together, I'm getting an hour in, but somehow, I think my performance is better by splitting up the activities, and I'm getting more benefit from my yoga and my evening workouts.

The key for me is to keep working on this, because if I just stop exercising, I know myself -- my whole regimen will go kerflooey.

How does the warm weather affect your usual work out routines, if at all?

When it was really hot and humid in St. Thomas, I'd go to a huge store like Home Depot and walk for an hour, up and down the aisles. Made it look as if I was looking for something. The AC made it bearable. A little strange, I know, but free!!!

At least youre getting some exercise. I've found the same thing with exercising in the evening. Too much and it's impossible to sleep. It's so hot and humid here in Charlotte, NC, I exercise indoors in the summer. I have a treadmill at home, but I've gone mall walking, too. I have a small, very safe mall that's about 7 minutes from my house. My husband belongs to a gym.

    Sounds perfect to me!
I LOVE the heat, and have access to a fairly large town pool which, yes, has squealing children, but I can still manage laps in.
Playing with your daughter in the pool still burns calories, don't forget emoticon

I really need to get back to a morning yoga practice. Thanks for the inspiration! emoticon

Yes, I am lucky that it is so temperate here in Southern California, but I do not feel well exerting myself in the heat. No A/C or gym membership for this cheapskate, either.

May we find relief from sweaty crabbiness, and find ways to move that feel good!

Yes the heat can be zapping of the energy. Myself I do have access to a swimming pool so yesterday I decided instead of doing my Wii Fit routine that I had actually wanted to do I went swimming instead. Another thing I can do my exercise machines are in the basement were it tends to be much cooler which lately when I have been using them is in the evening, when the temps are starting to go down a bit, that way I can come back upstairs and not be sweaty and have to deal with the heat at the same time.

I do like your idea for exercising and fitting in yoga as well.

100% agree -- heat saps my energy to the core! I get up early too and get started while it's cooler.

Your plan of being flexible with your work out is a good one. I will alter mine come the cooler weather too.

I'm with you on the heat. emoticon

I get up at 3 a.m. which is a lot cooler then the day time. I physically work all day long and that is the bulk of my work out this month while I'm deep cleaning my house which is additional exercise and takes the balance of my day.

Next month I am doing my morning regimen at the mall walking with stairs. In September I am adding 30 minutes in the morning of some form of body modality work: stretching, yoga, tai chi, etc. Added to this on the weekends I'm walking right next to the river and that is cooler. All in all it will be enough.

Hang in there, summer is here but it will be gone soon enough. emoticon
