How to start the swimming season?

Saturday, May 03, 2014

With a big jump! :-)

The outdoor pool opened on 1st May here in Gleisdorf. Last year, it took me almost 5 weeks until I finally went there and re-started my swim. I decided that for 2014, I do it better, and start with the first day. It's not a big deal, just need to buy the season's pass.

I marked it in my calendar well ahead, so on 1st May for sure I will be able to get there - and I did.

The water was cold (18C / 65F), and we were the only ones, but I did it!

And I already feel the difference!
I have everything set up to be able to go to swim, so the resistance is much lower for next time:
- Monthly pass
- Swimming gear
- Opening times

Do you go to swim?
Where and how long?

I don't think the closest pool is open yet, but I am going to make an effort to go this year. It will be quite an outing without a car - but a great morning or afternoon of fitness. I think you've inspired me!

Swimming was a joy during my childhood. We lived a blog from Lake Michigan, one of the Great Lakes...I would drive the lifeguards crazy as I was so buoyant with my extra pounds I would swim for hours out past the buoy where the water was so deep, mysterious and enticing. Could I still touch bottom? When I couldn't I would get nervous and head a little closer to shore. Tired? No problem, lie back and float on my back for a breather!

    Those were the days! :-)

I should try to pick up again with swimming...have long since given it up as the self-consciousness of adulthood & obesity took over...

I don't swim as much as I should but I like to mix it into my fitness routine once in a while. Unfortunately, our campus pool is closed until the Fall due to construction so I won't be swimming again for a while.

Swimming is a great exercise. I grew up in Hawaii and was on a swim team. We did not have heated water. You are doing well to swim in that cool water. I do not swim much now except for visits home.

Great start on the swimming season.

I could not swim in water that cold. You are brave!! I would love to join a gym where there is an indoor pool.

That looks like a nice pool. But I would not get in if it is 65 degrees! I have a pool and we opened it in mid April. Right now it is about 65 - 70 degrees F. I like it best when it is about 93 degrees. Most people think that is much too warm but that is where I am comfortable. In the past I have not done much swimming, more like lounging for hours on end. This summer I am going to make an honest effort to actually swim. I find swimming to be very difficult so I will have to build up my strength and endurance.

Enjoy your swimming Oliver, I think it is one of the best exercises we can do.
