Do you run in wind?

Wednesday, April 16, 2014

Looking out the window, it looks terrible, the trees are bent under the heavy wind, people wearing coats and hats.

However, I know from my previous experience that it always looks worse from inside then actually it is.

So, I decided to get out and run.
I just wore my little running shorts and sleeves, as usual.

The first minute was a bit cold, but after that my body warmed up, and actually I felt very comfortable.

In fact, running in the cold is a really nice experience, usually I run easier, faster, and with a better technique.
In warm and hot weather, my body already needs to spend a lot of energy on cooling (sweating), and although it looks more welcoming before running, when I actually run, it is just average.

And here you are two pictures from todays run, near Gleisdorf. In just a month, everything turned from white and gray into harsh green. I'm so lucky to live so close to the nature. Just a few steps, and I'm in green areas.

So, how is your experience?

I'm still not up to running but hope to be soon. This cool spring weather and the landscape is so inviting! Just walks for me right now, though. Thanks for the inspiration, Oliver!

We've had some blustery days lately...this was my most memorable:

There is something special about immersing oneself into the wind and everything else nature sends our way! :-)

Thanks for the pictures. They look like nice places to walk or run in your case.

I like to run with wind, but not into it.
I also prefer to run in cooler weather!
    Very nice pictures too!

Hi Oliver, thanks for sharing the lovely pictures!
Totally agree with you: it is (almost) never as bad as it looks : )
    Great job you ventured outside.
I don't mind running in winter, unless it is a snow storm or a lot of dust/sand in the air.
And I prefer cold weather too!

Lovely pictures Oliver! I do run a little. I do not enjoy running in the cold because it hurts my lungs. If the temperature is moderate (say around 60 degrees) I will go in the wind - I went earlier this week when it was very windy. It is a bit of a struggle going up the hills against the wind because I am a very slow runner anyway and the wind causes resistance. But I also find that the wind evaporates any sweat and that I feel quite comfortable if the air temperature is not too cold. I do not usually run in the rain.

I like cold weather for running better than hot weather, though I'm not fond of snow and ice under foot. I managed to run outside regularly through the past winter. I think the worst weather I ran in was 5° F (-15° C) with snow blowing in a 25 mph (40 kilometers per hour) wind. I only managed a bit over 3 miles (~5K), and my glasses frosted over, but I ran. After that, every time the weather looked bad I could say I'd run in worse.

I pay attention to the wind before I start mostly because it affects my choice of clothing for the run. I will run in most of the weather I get, but not in an active snow storm when I expect the plows to be out working. It's just not safe to run the roads when the plows are active.

Now, the snow is gone. Got a nice 41° F (5° C) evening with sunshine for a run today, with light wind. It's all good.

I will run in cool but not COLD. I run sort of cause I "have to"--I am training for a 5K in May. I do not love running and I do not go very fast at all--in fact, I can likely walk faster than I run but I try to burn more calories! On Sunday, I went out to do my 5K distance and managed but found out it was 80 degrees Fahrenheit so no wonder it was so hard to run!

Awesome pictures - thanks for posting them. I am not a runner but a brisk walker and I love it when it is colder. I do walk faster and longer in the cool weather, too
