Weight Gain

Wednesday, March 19, 2014

I couldn't figure out why my body wasn't following the weight gain range for pregnancy (15-25 pounds). I had been using this guideline based on my starting BMI and Height (5'8 3/4 inches). In the pregnancy weight gain tracker, I could only add whole inches to my height, so I added 5'8. Well, come to find out, if I put in a height of 5'9 my weight range adjusts to (25-35 pounds!). NO WONDER I was a little above my weight gain recommendation before. I'm closer to 5'9 in height than I am 5'8.

My highest weight within that recommended range would be: 203 pounds. I'm currently at 188 pounds with 14 weeks to go. I'm hoping the gain is slow and steady, although I have to admit gaining weight is scary. It is hard to see yourself go from healthy and fit to gaining a bunch of weight. It's a hard mental adjustment to wrap your head around. I realize it is for the baby, its normal, and its healthy. However, it is STILL hard to see your body go through all these changes that you feel are out of your control.

I know my body will never be the same, however, I'm terrified I won't even recognize it as my own after giving birth. I'd like to feel like some small part of my former self still exists. I have the normal fear, also, that my husband won't be attracted to me after this whole process is done with.

I've already gained 20 pounds, and I feel like huge. Supposedly people gain around 1 pound a week from here on out, which would add another 14 pounds. *Sigh*

Hey! I'm 29 weeks 2 days and I've really struggled with the weight gain as well. I feel like pregnancy really messes with our body image....like a lot! I've recently started coming to the conclusion that worrying about the number is just not worth it. I was at the point during the awkward middle stage where I didn't take weekly photos because I just felt fat all the time. Then I started realizing that I'll only be pregnant a short time and afterwards I can start thinking about the number again. Every woman gains a different amount of weight and I think you look perfectly fine and perfectly healthy in your pictures! Don't worry, baby will be here soon :D

You are ABSOLUTELY beautiful and I love that you are documenting each week along the way. I wish I had done the same.

The weight will come off, maybe not as easily, and not likely as quickly, but it will even if you have to work a little harder. But remember that this beautiful body housed and grew a baby, a great joy for many months. Your body can do miraculous things and for that, give it a rest before you jump right into fitness again. Go slow, give it time and enjoy life.

I wish I was as tall as you! LOL!
