Virtual 5K

I have just completed a virtual 5K through my sparkteam: Official Sparkpeople Walk/Jog 5K Program. This was my third 5K.

The first one I tried was all on my own, just to get a baseline for my pace. I wanted to enter a charity 5K, but I didn't want to sign up until I knew that I could at least walk 3.1 miles in in session. Thanks to a wonderful app on my phone, I was able to go to my neighborhood park and get it done. It took me 59:45 minutes, but I finished without stopping once. (The charity 5K was canceled because of an ice storm)

Then I heard about a virtual 5K that fellow sparker Slimkatie was hosting through her blog: www.runsforcookies.com. (If you haven't read her blog, I encourage you to do so!) To celebrate her birthday, she hosted a virtual 5K, where you could sign up online, post your goal time, and even print out race bibs! On the appointed day, everyone would run/walk/jog their own 5K, then post their time on her blog. She then posted the results- It was really kind of awesome, and much less scary for this girl.
Anyway, my time for this 5K was 52:41. My daughter was there playing soccer with her friends, and they cheered me on.

So I decided that I was going to try to find other Virtual 5Ks that I could sign up for, and low and behold...Sparkpeople has teams for just such challenges!!! I have committed to walk/jogging a 5K on the last Friday of every month, which means that by the end of 2014, I will have completed 12 5Ks!
My time for today was 50:58...Needless to say, I'm feeling pretty fantastic!

    emoticon Doesn't it feel incredible to complete an accomplishment like this one? I ran my first 5 km last year and managed to complete three, with one being a charity run. I've signed up again this year.
