Don't beat yourself up over a missed workout

Thursday, January 30, 2014

Wow this is so easy to do ! You miss a workout because of "life". Let's face it things in life do mess up our best laid plans from time to time. You what ? It is what it is and we have to get past it.

Missing a workout is Not the end of the world, your fitness / weight loss journey does not come crashing to a halt because you miss a workout or two occasionally. I'm writing about this because just this week I missed two workouts in a row ! For people that know me this is next to unheard of. But it happened, yesterday I woke up at my usual time(2:30am) and felt totally exhausted. Not enough sleep the night before and restlessness gave me a night of very poor sleep quality. So instead of going to the gym I went back to bed for an hour or so until I had to get up for work. Still pretty beat I put in a really stressful day at work. Then I did what I shouldn't have, I ordered Chinese take out for supper. Hey I make poor decisions when I'm exhausted just like most everyone does. Besides I just wanted some comfort food and Chinese is one of them for me. I did make one good decision though and that was to Not get up this morning and workout., I set my alarm for 4am last night and I feel much better for it.

There's a physical side to this as well. When we are exhausted like I was doing a hard physical workout only adds stress to your body which is already trying to deal with the exhaustion. This effects you in several ways, one after the workout your body is not nearly as able to recover from the workout, rebuilding muscle and repairing the normal damage done during the course of a day. The other thing it does is leave us much more vulnerable to infections, colds, flu, strep, bronchitis, etc. The problem is that some of these infections can take you out for a week or more. So instead of missing A workout you miss a whole bunch. What this means is being smart, learn what your limits are. Remember a healthy diet and exercise are only two of the pieces to living and being healthy. Proper and adequite sleep is the other. Sleep is the time when your body actually goes to work and repairs itself from the damages caused by the rest of life during our waking hours. Without adequate quality sleep eating healthy and exercise are like a two sided box it simply collapses.

So the next time you miss a workout, don't beat yourself up ! Be smart and pick up right where you left off the next day.

You know people have said to me they think I'm obsessed about fitness and working out. But I explain I'm not obsessed, I'm dedicated. An obsessed person would go off the deep end and not be able to go on with the rest of life if they missed a workout. Not me I just as I said pick things up where I left off.

Both are good but if you have to choose between exercise and tracking your calories, the last is far more important to your health.
