I've started jogging?!?!?!

Wednesday, January 22, 2014

I'm not sure what has gotten into me, but I have decided to start jogging. My knee says no and my back is on the fence, but my brain likes it plenty! For two days now, I walk until I am warmed up and then I jog for just a tiny bit until my knee says to stop. Then I walk until it feels better, and then jog another tiny bit. I'm wearing a brace on my knee and taking it slow. I try to run on grass when I can and I have a good pair of shoes.

Here's the deal. Every year when I was a kid, we were supposed to run a mile in P.E. class. I was ALWAYS the last one to finish it. If it was hot at all outside, and it usually was (I live in San Marcos, Texas), I might even vomit and have a headache for the rest of the day. In fifth grade I had been given a cruel nickname, "Molly moo-cow," that stuck for several years. In seventh grade when I had to run the mile again, a whole class of boys and girls chanted "moo-cow! moo_cow!" as they lapped me and the coaches looked on.

These are my memories of running. Or jogging. Or limping along in the heat trying not to look like an idiot.

The thing is, I still WANT to BE ABLE to run. In this one respect, my life feels like one of those dreams where you're being chased and your legs won't move. I want very badly to be able to jog a WHOLE mile without stopping.

One more thing: While I am jogging, I try very hard not to think of the past me, but the me from the very near future. This future me is an athlete who would never be made fun of for "trying to run."

I have bad memories of PE myself; I was a skinny kid back then, but I had no athletic ability whatsoever. I remember I was always the slowest runner, and the one picked last for teams. I'm telling you this to feel sorry for me, but to let you know that I know how you feel, and I know how those kinds of memories stick with us. (I'm 50 years old now.)

I give you kudos for trying! And I have a feeling that you will jog that whole mile some day!

emoticon You are doing great! Listen to your body and before you know it you will completely your first mile run. I use running to think. And it is the perfect time for you to think toward your future, like you are doing. Don't let the past dictate who you will be in the future. You have control of that
