What a Year it's been!

A year ago, was sitting on the same couch I'm sitting on right now, but I was putting a little more stress on the springs. I started the year at 369 pounds, and everyday tasks were a challenge. Walking upstairs, tying my shoes, even getting off the couch was a struggle. I had High Blood Pressure, and the doctor was warning me to lose weight, or have serious issues. I knew something needed to be done. Then my wife came home from the doctors with a diagnosis of pre-diabetes. That was the starting gun! My boss gave us gym memberships as a Christmas Bonus, so we joined up and started on the journey. I remember telling the personal trainer during our initial assessment that I wasn't going to run. In any case, we found a workout online that looked interesting enough to keep us from getting bored, and hit the weights. We started out slow, we spent about an hour a day 4 days a week working out. 2 days of weight training, and 2 days of cardio. I started slowly losing, then came February. My wife found Sparkpeople! All of a sudden, I could see exactly how much I was eating and drinking, and saw the path to BIG weight loss! We changed our eating habits. No more drinking calories, no more boxed or canned foods, no more junk (potato chips, McDonald's, etc.) We upped our workouts to 5 to 6 days a week, still about an hour a session (A little longer for weight training, about 45 minutes to an hour for cardio). The Weight started falling off FAST! And by July 4th, I had lost 100 pounds, and needed to stop taking my high blood pressure medicine. And the best part is, that I don't even feel like I'm on a diet. We still eat delicious food, and go out to eat. For us, it's just about healthy choices. Sirloin, with Asparagus, instead of New York Strip with baked potato. Grilled Chicken Salad with dressing on the side, instead of Hamburger and fries. Fish one day a week, and vegetarian one day.

Overall, the year has been good. We've had some challenges, our weight loss has slowed a bit, but things are still going good. I've lost 140 pounds so far with another 60 to lose by next Christmas. I got a promotion at work, Our gym has asked me to be a Spokesperson, using my before and after photos in ads. One of our local TV stations (WKYC in Cleveland) featured Julie and I as a weight loss success story on their morning show, and I have some big opportunities coming up in my career. So, here's to 2014! May you be just as good for me as 2013!

    I THINK that is awesome, i had a 4 year gym membership, for my daughter,i was to lazy to go. after her husbands death,the gym became her second home. this year i am rejoining the gym to actualley go. your story inspired me, good luck on your adventure. becky emoticon
