Am I a Grown up yet?

Saturday, October 12, 2013

I'm 36 years old, have taught for 14 years but now am wondering if it is what I want to do for the rest of my life. I teach kindergarten and am getting burnt out. The kids are getting more disrespectful every year. I have a very tough group this year. I'm sick of parents who think everything is the school's fault and their kid is a perfect little angel. I'm sick of politicians who think they know everything about teaching and tell us what we need to do. I'm sick and tired of testing. I'm tired of teaching kindergarten and having to push academics when kindergarten should be fun. It breaks my heart when the children groan and ask, "why do we have to do this?" and all I can say is because we need to test you and find out what you know. I think I still enjoy teaching for the most part but am wondering if there is something better out there for me.

Teaching, in my opinion, is a very difficult one today. I applaud all teachers and give them my support for trying to do the best job possible in today's climate. If you are burning out I would recommend seeing what else is out there. There may be another field, or a different place of employment that would challenge and excite you again.

    Good luck whatever you decide.

I was an elementary school librarian for 32 years. I started in 1968 and kindergarten was fun. There was a piano in every k room and sand tables and kitchen corners and wooden beads to string and nap time. Back then if I had a discipline issue just saying do you want me to call your Mon or Dad took care of most of it. I loved my job because I had the freedom to share my love of literature and reading. emoticon emoticon By the time I retired we were all boxed into the Hunter method of teaching and reading and discussing a story to a class was not considered a valid lesson by the administration.. emoticon The punitive atmosphere that any failure rested on the teaching staff with no responsibility placed on the child or parents. Some of my least able students would work so hard to master a skill while some of the very very gifted had the just try and make me learn attitude.
    So sad.
Oh I still am trying to decide what to be when I grow up. emoticon

I too am feeling the shift away from the goodness that teaching used to bring me. I wish it wasn't the case, but sadly the field is changing. If you figure out a better something, please share!

Did you think about teaching in private schools or Christian Schools?
