Eastern States Exposition - The BIG E

Thursday, September 26, 2013

Have any of you been to the BIG E in W. Springfield, MA ? If so, you know there is so much to see, and food, food everywhere ~ some healthy, most probably not. emoticon

The BIG E was founded in 1916, and the first Eastern States Expo in 1917.

It is the only fair in the Country with multiple States participating. There are replicas of each New England states "original" statehouse, sitting on land actually owned by that State.

Massachusetts was the first to build their replica in 1919 at a cost of $50,000.

Next came Maine, built in 1925 at a cost of $50,000.

The 3rd was Vermont in 1929, at a cost of $60,500.

The 4th to build their replica was New Hampshire, in 1930 at a cost of $75,000.

The 5th state was Connecticut, in 1938 at a cost of $85,000.

And, finally, the 6th & last New England state is Rhode Island in 1957 for $150,000.

That was our walk along the "Avenue of States". Each state shows the products that they are known for.

The Maine cookie is the Whoopie Pie, so I brought DH home a Giant Wicked Whoopie Pie. It weighed about 4 lbs. Not diet friendly, but boy was it good.

Connecticut had a display for being Lego Country.

It wasn't on the Avenue of States, but Cabot Creamery of Vermont had a sculpture made of butter. It sure was neat !!

Then there was the parade. It was Springfield Day, the day we were there. I love Clydesdale horses, they are just so beautiful.

Here are a few more pictures taken at the parade. It's my son and daughter-in-law with the pumpkin family. I was impressed with their police Mobile Command Unit.

I hope you enjoyed my trip to the BIG E.....We walked around for about 7 hours. There was much to see ~~ food, crafts, animals, exhibits, etc. There are also carnival rides for the young at heart !!

I grew up in S. Hadley MA. While in school we had the day off to go to THE EASTERN STATES EXPOSITION, or just plain Eastern States. The busses took us . My favorite was always the state building.
