1 Lap and 14 Minutes of Agony...I LOVED It

Saturday, September 07, 2013

The first cross race of the season was today. Lionheart CX. It's a non points race that raises money for the local developmental youth cycling team. Dang, did it hurt.

I rode my bike to the race. It was only 4.7 miles away and I had to ride my cx tires on pavement, but the ride there represented my longest ride of the year. I knew I was in for some serious pain. I got signed in, got my number pinned on, and took the opportunity to preride the course. I've had better ideas.

Sure, the preride gave me some idea as to what to expect, but, considering the complete lack of conditioning for me this year, I should have saved my matches. Once the race started, I had to walk sections that I easily rode on the preride. When I came up to the start/finish line on my first lap, the field had caught up to me. I figured that I would just be getting in the way of the other riders and pulled the plug. I wasn't even sure that if I had started a second lap I would have been able to finish it.

Think of this: after my first half marathon, I have never doubted my ability to finish a half marathon once I started them. After one 1.6 mile lap in a cross race, I wasn't sure if I could finish a second lap. A 30 minute cx race is WAAAAAY harder than a 3.5 hour half marathon.

The upshot is this: the half marathon I did a couple weeks ago and today's cx race mark the first tentative steps back from the deep, dark hole that has been the last few weeks. Not only that, they've been a freaking blast. Can't wait for the next race...or even with the next run with the dog.

I'm impressed! A few friends have suggested I give cyclocross a try. I have yet to do it, and I don't have the bike for it.

But the Hubs has been receptive to the idea of my buying yet another bike ...

Something about going where there are no roads. I find that running trails is double the effort of the street. A 5k is like a 10k, 10k is like a half and a Half kills me as much as a full. Times don't double, just the effort.

I do not know what a cx race is. But it sounds real hard, and at least you tried. Next time maybe you will do better and hopefully finish!
