101 medaling monkeys

Yesterday my daughter Michelle and I walked in the Special Olympics fundraiser Medaling Monkey 5k. Special Olympics is dear to our hearts.

Here we are in our banana yellow shirts in front of the Special Olympics torch.

I must say I was tired before the walk began (busy weekend, see yesterday's blog) and my right knee was sore from our canoe trip. Not to mention I also had poison ivy on my ankles. Yikes!!!

But I sucked it up and put in my best effort. We walked the entire run, even though Michelle was encouraging me to jog a bit. I just couldn't! I was afraid my knee would give out and I would have to crawl back to the car! I must say when we were just about at the one mile mark and the runners were already returning, I felt like a bit of a slug. We did jog across the finish line though. Our time? 48 min 2 seconds.

Not quite where I wanted it to be - but not bad considering how I felt. Going to take a rest from the 5k's for the remainder of the month, but I will continue to walk on my treadmill. Will probably try another in the fall to see if I can boost my time. Not sure if I will be able to jog a bit, with the knee, but time will tell.

Trying to be sensible and not take myself entirely out of the game by hurting myself. This is where I get myself into trouble. I tell myself to push through the pain, instead of listening to my body screaming at me to stop. Going to try to do something different this time. There are other ways to work out and give my knee a bit of a break. Hmmmmm, maybe I am learning something this time around!

    Hey - you finished! That is huge, whether you walked or crawled or jogged or sprinted. Be proud of the fact you tried and you completed your intended task. GOOD JOB!

    Good for you for completing it, but yes, you should maybe give it a rest. The treadmill at least has some cushioning, so it may feel better. Your pace was 15:29 per mile which is pretty good if you ask me. So way to go you medaling monkeys!
