8/12/13 I Have Tiki Torches....

Monday, August 12, 2013

I have a half marathon in less than 7 days, I have 2 cx races scheduled about 2 weeks after that. Training has sucked. Both of them are going to hurt (but in a very good way). I, however, have Tiki torches and Wi-Fi that reaches my patio. I'm content.

My house has a patio off the garage. When I was a kid, my sisters and mom would lay out on the patio and slather themselves with some sort of tanning oil in search of that perfect tan. We used to have cook outs on it. After my buds and I saw Mary Poppins, we ruined many a bumbershoot jumping off the corner of the patio in hopes of flying. (Note: we never tied a cape around our necks and jumped off. THAT would've been stupid.) In the evening, the little Japanese lanterns would be lit, the bug zapper would be turned on, and we would hang out.

By the time my Dad retired, the joy of the patio had been lost. Dad and Mom never spent any time out here. It was just...there. There were times that I talked to Dad about maybe tearing it down and putting on an addition, turning the 1 car garage into a 2 car garage. I'm glad we didn't do that, because I have Tiki torches.

Yesterday was a gorgeous night. Clear sky, low humidity, temperature in the low to mid 70's.... My sweetie came over and we went out to eat, hung around inside, then went to a movie. It was a perfect patio night and we didn't take advantage. So I rectified things this afternoon. After an incredibly busy morning of napping, breakfast, napping, petting the mutt, and napping, I went to the hardware store and bought a small outdoor table (makes a great foot rest), some buckets, sand, and a couple Tiki torches.

Right now, Elvis and I are out on the patio. The Tiki torches are lit, my butt is in a chair, feet are up on the table, Uncle Tupelo's "No Depression" is playing through my laptop's crappy speakers, and King is laying down just out of arms reach, growling at my neighbors and my other neighbor's cats. The torches don't through out much light and that's perfect. I like shadows. Right now, all that could improve things would be better speakers, a tad less humidity, and a bug zapper. Citronella just can't compete with one of those purple glowing thingies that noisily electrifies any and all bugs that venture near.

Good luck and enjoy your upcoming races.

I think our patio is my favorite Spring, Summer and part of Fall place at my house. When it turns late Fall and Winter my fireplace is my favorite. It is the perfect way to end my work day before I start dinner. After dinner I head right back out there and enjoy the fresh night air until the bugs find me. It is my little oasis. Enjoy!
