Why Do I Care about the numbers?

Thank you to all who responded to my previous blog. I don't know whether or not I care about the numbers. I know that I should NOT care about Spark Points but my life and my progress revolves around numbers: my blood sugar reading 3 or 4 times a day, my weight, the number of reps I can do in the strength training circuit; the number of pounds I can life; the number of calories in and the number of calories out. My BMI. My blood pressure. My cholesterol and my triglycerides.

The bottom line is that I still do not trust my instinctive or intuitive feelings about how I am doing; I need all of these measurements.

I'm really a person who loves words and an abstract imagination but by training myself to pay attention to the numbers and the concrete, I have helped myself in my crawl towards fitness. It has not come naturally to me so I work harder to see if I can find the poetry in points and numbers.

    I am like you I would rather get back to trusting my intuition. I read somewhere that we would be an interesting group and confusing to archelogists say 1500 years from now. They would wonder why everyone is writing down exactly what they are eating. Nothing about their lives, just that they had to track everything.

    I know all this tracking, tracking, tracking makes me feel a little OCD. A lot of us are even counting every step we take. We don't trust ourselves enough to even get enough exercise without a counter. It's messed up.

    Don't forget measurement numbers. I started tracking my measurements in April and when I hit my recent plateau these were morale boosting signs of progress. It's good to have a number of numbers : ) to rely on so you don't get hung when you're struggling with one, like a weight plateau.

    I've always loved numbers. When I use the FitLinx machines at the gym and get that message at the end that I lifted 16,000 pounds, I just love it. Nothing wrong with tracking the numbers. I just can't get too discouraged when the number on the scale stubbornly doesn't move.

    Some numbers are important like your blood sugar, weight, calories in & out, counting reps...and some numbers are completely irrelevant like spark points. They add some fun to the site, but if you really want to know what's important ask yourself how much you would *pay* to have that component on this site?
    Sometimes reframing questions is a good way to figure out what's important and what is not.

    I hear ya. Words can offer encouragement and motivation--but they can also make excuses. The numbers don't lie. Nothing motivates me to keep working hard like seeing a smaller number on the scale or getting a better report from my blood work. (Although I have to admit that when the numbers go the opposite way, it can feel more hopeless than motivating. I'm hoping that recent successes will change that.)

    Spark points? I'm not fixated on them, but I have to say that I get a little thrill when the Bonus Wheel pops up!

    I'm totally obsessed with the numbers too, including Sparkpoints. If it helps motivate us to be healthier, then why not? emoticon

    You got it. Numbers/measurement is what it takes to improve.

    BTW, IMHO, too many people, here, are focused on SparkPoints & social matters rather than the numbers that can actually save their lives when focused-on properly.

    I'll put my verbal skills and interests up against anyone, here, but when it comes to "doing it", numbers are the key.

    Having said all that, I find blogging and helping others to be quite helpful in maintaining my commitment to my program.

    What makes Spark great, IMO, are the great tools for creating and dealing with numbers.

    our first lessons in kindergarden and even before are numbers... and letters, too, don't forget!

    and Bertrand Russell wrote how fascinated he was about 'how numbers hold sway over the flux'.

    You made a little slip that proves your point... "but my life and my progress revolves around numbers... the number of pounds I can life..."

    I do see your point. But your calories in and out, blood sugar, reps and cardio minutes are YOU. They are the numbers of your flesh and blood. Spark points are more arbitrary, set by something that has never seen you - something you can't control or talk to or manage yourself.

    It's like working hard on a paper and turning that paper in. Your work is what matters. If your teacher grades that paper in a manner that seems unfair to you, does that keep you from tweaking that paper and selling it to a magazine? Or giving it just as it is to a friend who might enjoy it more? Or just keeping it for yourself. The research, the effort, the words themselves - those are yours, not the number at the top of the page.

    My take on Spark Points is that if it helps keep you focused on making healthy choices it is a good thing. I track my food and fitness, read articles, etc and if I didn't have the "point" incentive I might not be as consistent. I think it is a brilliant motivator!

    The more you concern yourself with numbers now in working toward a healthy lifestyle, the better the numbers will be when you have reached your goal!

    Ok, I am one who agrees with numbers. I am an RN. I take other peoples blood sugars, I look at lab values. I track my own calories every day (thank you Nutrition degree)! I feel like numbers are what you make them. They are the mirror that you can look into that does not lie, depending on the number. Cholesterol? Blood glucose? Time in the gym? Calories? Good numbers. Spark points....not so much!!!Don't get me wrong, spark is great...in it's place!!!
