Spark Points!

Friday, July 12, 2013

I don't get it.

We have a member of Spark People who had a total of 405,473 points listed on June 30 (the last day of the month). On the last day of May this member had 391,929 points listed. Hence the person must have earned 13,544 points in June.

Yet for June points only 5,052 points are listed for this member. How can there be so much of a disparity of almost 8000 points?

And there's another member who has a total of 333,994 points right now but had 318,597 in May. So that person earned 15,397 points in June but the master list says that the person earned 5642 in June. That is a disparity of almost 10,000 points.

Can anyone please explain these high rollers to me? I would like to ask them but their pages are set to private. Even if these people are earning massive points for posting, it would seem that their monthly totals would correspond to their monthly increase in points. Or is there something I am not getting?

I think a hard-working person who is really working Spark cannot hope to get much more than 6000 points per month. So I really do not comprehend the disparity in points. Just click on "All Time Spark Points" to see. I am not complaining, I am just befuddled by this academic or mathematical problem.

I personally do not take much if any notice of the spark points.

I much prefer to judge a person by their posts and blogs, by the advice they give and the encouragement they put in place.

Out of all my spark friends I could not tell how many points any of them are on or what level they might be on. I couldn't even tell you if they have a rosette, a cup or a crown.

I could nevertheless tell you what they have written in their blogs, and I could tell you what they have said when visiting my blogs. I can tell you how they have helped me and how hopefully I may have helped them. I can also tell you how much I value them every time they make an input be it towards me or anybody else.

In short if I was asked to describe any of my spark friends their point or their levels would not feature. What they have lost or what they intend to loose or how far they are through their weight correction journey most probably would.

I really don't know. But I DO know I love getting Spark Points. I think of myself as Andrew Carnegie at times, and try to dedicate myself to sending Spark Goodies regularly to Spark Friends. Without Spark Points, there are no Spark Goodies. It's a racket!

Personally I just don't worry about anyone elses' points. I just try to do what I can in a day and not worry about it. I'm here to get healthy, track my calories and tracking my fitness keeps me walking for fitness. Who cares who makes more points than you. This is a competition with myself and no one else.

Ahh..the Spark Points conundrum. I have no answer, but I, also, have wondered about how the trophies are awarded at the end of the month of points earned. There have been some months when I have accrued a lot, only to recieve a trophy for 250 or 500 points. I have not looked into it, but I believe that only certain things count towards the total, not all. Speaking of points, congrats to you for placing on the Leader Board for this week!

I have once in my spark time managed to top the "leaderboard" of spark points - it was when I started and I carefully planned it - you got 1000 points for buying the book "spark people" then (this was 2009) and I waited until the start of a month and then - wham! - bought it in the morning and then added all the points I could by reading, posting, tracking... and for a very short moment there I was number one...

Yes, silly, but the point system has from the start been a ggod motivator for me. Since I reached the highest level - crossed a 100 000 points it has lost its meaning but it has gotten me into the habit of checking in, visiting five of my teams every day, huddle and post on the message board.

But I rsrely looka at other peoples points, especially not since I have reached the maximum level. But I remember that I have wondered how people collect so many points - because there is a maximum per day and I don´t understand how they get more - the "extras" are mostly only available one time - after I bought the Spark book I woud of course not buy it again (and would not get any points for it AND I have not bought any other of the stuff that gives points because I don´t want it...)

The points does not motivate me anymore - or so i think, maybe they do a little. Because I do my "round" in the teams and huddle which I probably would not anymore if I saw no immediate effect. The friendships and value of spark friends is the real value but that takes time to build, the points are (for me) some instant reward that keep me going...

I was really excited about points when I joined. I wanted every point I could get. And then I realized I was worrying more about points than people. Now I don't even spin sometimes. But I do look at my friend feed every day and "like" lots of things like people's fitness minutes, and leave comments when I feel motivated to do so. And I track my food and fitness. Beyond that, I feel I can't really afford the time to worry about it.

At first I was really impressed with other people's points and fitness minutes. Now I hardly look at them, either. Someone could LOOK really good in both departments and have little to offer in friendship and fitness advice. Then again, someone with lower points and minutes could be a great friend.

Anyway, I just now noticed that YOU have almost 100,000 points. First time I've looked. I was drawn to you over an eloquent blog title some months back, not your points.

    1) Maybe a lot of fitness minutes?
    2) Maybe a lot of people they invited have joined?

I have my weight ticker showing, but not my nutrition or fitness trackers, and while I can't say I garner a lot of points off either one (gee, I wish, lol) I think by having them hidden I may have some points show up at the end of the month that wouldn't be reflected by any particular activity. Maybe.

Anytime I won 1000 points (once) or 500 points (a couple of times) the system only granted me 3 as part of my accrued total, although the extra points all counted toward my spendable points for goodies.

You know what the king of Siam said: "Tis a puzzlement--!"

Maybe they bought every book, linked up all kinds of gadgets, and who knows what else?

Or they pre-plan their meals and workouts, and so log in all of that ahead of time?

On the other hand, these are virtual points, so, well, maybe they have a point scam going?

I don't have a clue. You could always contact SparkPeople about it.

I'm not sure where the disparity happens, but I won a 1000 points on the SparkGoodie Wheel yesterday. Sometimes the SparkGoodie points are different than the actual SparkPoints too.

They be lucky on the wheel emoticon

Like Onlytemporary below, I once got a really high number of points off a 1000 point spin. Also, they may be completing some of the activities at the bottom of the SparkPoints page - I was surprised at my point jump when I joined the Finances Team. Another thing, there are bonus points awarded for some activities - these may not accrue as 'earned' points and therefore not show as such.

It may be that they got some really high spins and bonus spins. I have had several months where I got 500 points 2 or 3 times. I have seen 1,000 on the wheel and gotten it too.
