New Path Ahead

Well, it finally happened today, June 3, 2013. After 6 years being pre-diabetic, my husband was diagnosed as a full-blown diabetic. He will be on insulin for the rest of his life, unless a cure is found.

I have vowed to stand by him, like I did when we had to quit smoking due to his heart problems, and give up my sugary drinks and desserts, cut back on carbs, and exercise more regularly. All the things I was supposed to be doing as a member of SparkPeople, but kept procrastinating about doing, is now going to have to be a priority for someone's sake other than mine. Hopefully, it will be enough motivation this time. I don't want to lose my husband. I love him very much.

There is another motivator as well. I am pre-diabetic,also. The same fate could be lurking in my future, unless I take action NOW! There is no longer a choice. I must take up the reins and steer our horse onto the right path. I must stay determined to follow that path, no matter how many obstacles get thrown in the way. I know my emoticon s will help me with that. emoticon emoticon

    you know we are here for you my friend. I am sorry to hear about your husband, its too bad diabetes isn't something that can be reversed the same way you can reverse your own pre-diabetes. You can do it... I know I been there and still flirt with the pre-diabetes.. get active, get rid of the sugary drinks, get active, watch what you eat - i got a lot of help through a nutritionist and now even SP has Spark D to help you monitor it - oh and did I suggest get active??? put your books down, walk away, at least 10 minutes at a time, if not more...
    and holler when you need us - and even when you dont!

    sorry to hear that but I'm sure you will take care of him in the best way possible. the most important thing for a person with diabetes is to get used to a strict schedule. he has to respect his diet , have his meals and insulin shots at fixed hours , plan and pack snacks if he leaves home , plan and do his walks or whatever exercise he has to do, check his glycemia and blood pressure all the time and I don't know if someone told you this but hypoglycemia is more dangerous than hyperglycemia. it's not impossible to do it, just a little annoying. emoticon emoticon
