59 fears, commitments, fun and rewards....

Saturday I had to face a huge fear of mine --- public speaking. I had an event to attend where I had to speak to a group of people for 30 minutes. I hate speaking to groups of people. I hate being the center of attention. I get nervous, I panic, I lose track of my thoughts. I get up there and my mind goes blank. Then I take a deep breath, look for a kind face, look at my notes and walk right in to that fog of fear. I must say, I was never so happy as when I saw that guy raise the sign saying I had 5 more minutes! I made it - and after, people had kind words to say --- no one said "You sucked"! Phew!
I keep telling myself to face my fears, eventually they will not have such a hold over me, but public speaking is a tough one! I don't know if I will ever get to the other side on that one, but I continue to try.
Following the speaking engagement, I headed up north for another commitment I had - I am a member of a service board and we had a meeting in northern Michigan. I convinced a friend to go with me - it is always more fun to share the travel time with someone else, and who doesn't love northern Michigan?
We headed north, following our mapquest directions, which got us lost on some country roads. In desperation we stopped at a road side farm store, hoping to get set in the right direction. We wandered past the flats of flowers and into the store - where there was fresh maple syrup, dried cherries and fruits, homemade jams and jellies, fresh asparagus and fresh home made breads, donuts, cookies. The store was a gem! We got our directions, a tiny individual loaf of bread for later, and hit the road.
After checking in our mote, room, eating a yummy dinner, we wandered along the walk by the bay where we stumbled by a young man who was selling some jewellery he had made from some stones he had found or purchased. They were wrapped in silver wire, unique and awesome. My friend bought one of the pieces. I didn't, but did get his information to possibly get something in the future. I love supporting budding artists!
Back to the hotel to unwind in the pool and hot tub, then back to the room to watch some tv.
Sunday morning we had our meeting which ended in the early afternoon. We decided to wander to the other side of the bay and follow the lakeshore home. We stopped at a light house at the most northern point of that side of the bay. Then got back in the car and headed south. Along the way a bald eagle soared above us. Further south, we stopped by another light house and walked a bit more.
Onward toward home, a few deer crossed the road in front of the car. We stopped at a scenic overlook and marveled at the beauty of Lake Michigan and counted our blessings for being able to call this beautiful place home.
One last stop in Ludington at the City Beach where we took another walk along the the pier and out to the light house there. My friend even posed on the ladder on the side of the light house for photos. Then back to the car and the last leg home.
Met my step goal this weekend, even with all the driving and sitting, made pretty good food choices, but did find ourselves eating late at night and did splurge with the prime rib, one of my weaknesses. My dad was a butcher, so I find in somewhat natural to be drawn to a good cut of beef!
Feeling good - face some fears, fulfilled some commitments, had some good conversation and fun with a good friend, and reaped the rewards of feeling accomplishment for facing that fear, of the gifts of service to others by attending that board meeting, and of smiles and deepened friendship for the time spent with my friend, not to mention taking the time to enjoy the beauty of nature that so many times we take for granted by taking the interstate and bypassing so we may save some time...
Now I am back home, trying to unpack and get ready for the upcoming work week and my routine ---- and I wish the weekend could never end, but moving on to a new week with endless potential!
