A day in St. Paul being a tourist.

Saturday, May 25, 2013

My husband and I decided to do a few things here in St. Paul where we have lived for 23 years. So we went to the MInnesota History Museum and then to the James J. Hill house.
Here are a few pictures of the fun and beauty that we saw today.
The Jenny that the Lindberg brothers flew. a tapestry of the light house in Duluth Native American bead work And then on to the JJ Hill house.

the ceiling with the gold in it.
James J. Hill lived on Summit Avenue in St. Paul and owned the Great Northern Railway and built his house for $1,000,000 back in 1891. The mansion was the largest and most expensive home in Minnesota. It was 36,000 square feet and had 5 floors. 13 bathrooms, 22 fireplaces, 16 crystal chandeliers, an art gallery, a reception hall and around 18 bedrooms. It was massive and these pictures don't do it's beauty justice.
The formal dining area had a ceiling that had 24 carat inlaid gold in the ceiling. For it's time, it was very modern with electricity and running water with showers and tubs in the bathrooms. It was absolutely beautiful and if you are ever in the St. Paul MN area, I would highly recommend a trip to the house.
Hope you enjoyed the pictures as much as I enjoyed visiting and taking them!

Thank you so much!!! Now I want to visit JJ Hill house! What an incredible, gorgeous place. Surely I'll have a conference in Minnesota one of these days so that I can go and visit Saint-Paul? :) That would be fun, but unfortunately it is only a dream at this stage!
I love the picture of you with the lilacs, I am really glad you chose it as your profile picture!

I love being a tourist in your home town. It's something we do far too seldom, I think. Thanks for sharing your pictures!

Fantastic! I love old buildings and especially those old mansions! What a place!! Loved the tapestry...that Split Rock Lighthouse was the first lighthouse I ever went up in! I wished we had had more time when we were up there to visit all these places. Was more interested in The Mall of America! emoticon Next time we will have you two give us the grand tour! emoticon emoticon emoticon

I would want to see the JJ Hill house, just beautiful, great pictures of the house and you pictured there, with Lilacs, I think. Loved the picture that you took looking through the lace curtains. Great info about the house too, emoticon emoticon emoticon

That looks like fun. I've been wanting to join the Minnesota Historical Society and do all the tours that it covers. There are so many places to see right in our backyards!
