Trivia

Thursday, March 28, 2013

Last night was the finale of the Winter Trivia League. Out of 69 teams, our team came in 2nd overall (this has been going on since January) which means we automatically go into the finals. Finals are April 20th. I don't know if we will go to watch the semi-finals where other teams try to compete for a chance to go to the finals.

I'm a bit thrilled honestly--I am the only old, fat lady in the Trivia league. Mostly there are earnest young men playing. You know that kind of young man I mean--the kind who are gawky but who can solve a Rubik's cube in one second. The kind who are geeky yet who have every sports stat memorized. I'm good for saying which President was at Harvard in 1904***** and that kind of deeply historical question.

It was FDR. I did not know it but I knew that Harry Truman had not been to college and that DDE was at West Point and the only one who worked in terms of being of college age in 1904 would have been FDR. Now my teammates might have guessed Nixon or Franklin Pierce....and thought that they were excellent guesses. One of the dubious benefits of age.

Congratulations! Sounds like you have a great trivia team. I think it would be a lot of fun. My son was on the scholar bowl team for many years in grade school and high school. He was also on the WYSE team and the math team. He won lots of trophies.

Congrats! 2nd place is darn good! Good luck in the finals. That esoteric/obscure (old???) knowledge comes in handy. emoticon

WOOHOO! We all have our area of expertise. You seem to have found your niche with a team that understands diversity is a good way to win. Congrats on getting to the finals! Great job!

Interesting take. I am a huge Jeopardy fan, and sometimes when there are three young contestants, they can't answer historical type of questions (which frequently aren't even that difficult or obscure). I guess getting old has some advantages!!! On the other hand, I don't know anything about music after 1985 or so.

Most of the pubs around here have what's called Quiz Night. People turn up in teams, anywhere from 2 to a dozen, and the "Quizmaster" (regardless of gender) gets things rolling. Usually there are various categories - sports, history, current events - and sometimes a picture-quiz, wherein they run off copies of photos of celebrities or maybe a picture that was featured in the news.

I'm allowed on the team for the inevitable American questions - there are always at least one or two. Pete Rose! The Johnstown Flood! No, not Baltimore - it's Annapolis! And then I generally quiet down again - I have no idea how many caps so-and-so had (something to do with sports) and don't even ask me who the local MP was in 1987. Occasionally we win, and prizes might be a bottle of wine, or a free dinner, or sometimes cash. Usually we don't win, but it's a great excuse for a night out.

I envy you, hon. I have no idea who was President at Harvard in 1904, though I could maybe come up with names of some famous Harvard graduates. Veritas! Crimson! The Hasty Pudding Club! Once in a while I can carry the day, lol...

My claim to trivia fame was knowing the answer to this question: "What is the highest navigable lake in the world?" Lake Titicaca. How could I possibly forget that from 6th grade geography class given how much giggling went on in the classroom? emoticon
