Jury duty

Thursday, March 28, 2013

So got a letter while back had to appear for jury duty. I went this morning there were about 60+ people and I was really disappointed in the fact that most of them (all but about 15) were doing there best to come up with reasons to be excused....It's sad really....

I have only been called for jury duty once, and I was selected to serve on a trial. I wasn't thrilled with the trial I served on, as it wasn't very exciting, but I loved jury duty itself. Hope you enjoy your time on jury duty, and don't let those other people ruin the experience for you.

Every time I get "the letter" to report for selection, I have mixed feelings. I have served on juries, not been selected, and, at other times gotten excuses. I work night shift. If they would actially select me for a time, it's one thing. I'll be excused from work and plan to sleep nights and participate in the judicial system. Generally, tho, the system here is set up to "make it easier" for the day shift workers. Most times, they say, "just call every afternoon before 2 pm and see if you're needed for the next day". Frustrating that I am asleep in the afternoons, and the Emergengy Department has to cover my nights when I'm going to be on jury duty both the night before and the night of the day I serve. Just select me already for the Grand Jury! They pretty much know they'll be serving certain days for a certain number of weeks.

One time I was selected, reported for duty the assigned morning, and the dude pled out. Another time, I served for 9 or 10 days. Fascinating! The call us daily bites.

Sad doesn't begin to describe that sort of behavior. DISGUSTING! Our system offers a JURY OF YOUR PEERS - meaning they are supposed to be comparable to you. Yours and my TRUE peers would be delighted to offer their intelligence and experience to help provide the most just results possible. It would be fabulous if some of those slackers wound up in front of a jury for something and then felt they weren't being given a fair shot. Divine retribution?
