The Long Road Home...

Thursday, February 28, 2013

The road to weight loss is not easy. Who said it was, right? Well, other than whatever covergirl is gracing Cosmo/Glamour/Redbook this month touting how she dropped those bothersome two pounds by drinking extra water.

But in all seriousness, it isn't.

What's really hard is that it's a path that we all often have to re-tread at some point in our lifetime. Those lessons we learned before have to be learned again and the process has to be restarted, modified, picked up, dropped, and changed over and over again. Does one size fit all for every person? Of course not. And on the same token, one size doesn't fit all for the same person at different life stages. And this is the lesson I am learning.

But there are things that don't work, ever. Hiding out, skipping functions, waiting to live until you reach some goal. That doesn't work for motivation and it doesn't work in this precious life we all live so briefly.

So here's my motto as I fight with these last 15 pounds: I will live. I will accept myself enough for photos, for memories, for all of the things that I will long for if I miss them. For all of the things that 80 year old me will look back and grieve over if I don't do them.

The bumps in the road are painful. Owning that we aren't as far as we'd like to be is as well. But none of that is worth checking out. And hiding will only prolong the journey.

We are never again going to be as young and beautiful as we are today - no matter where we are on our journey - and it's time to man up and start living that way.
